The United States is home to some of the largest companies across technology, manufacturing, food, biotech and more. Businesses like Microsoft, Apple and IBM launched what is now a booming U.S. technology industry and paved the way for companies like Meta, Google and NVIDIA to scale rapidly. Meanwhile, companies from other key sectors have managed to sustain their success — some for over a century.

Headed by billionaire entrepreneurElon Musk, Tesla is one of the most dominant electric car companies in the U.S. The company has overseen several vehicle launches and project announcements, including the proposed robot services that would enable Tesla owners to profit by opting into fully autonomous ride-hailing. Tesla reportedly has some 121,000 employees, many working across a variety of technological specialties.

 

Eli Lilly is one of the largest manufacturers of insulin and other medicines. Recently, the company has become famous for its production of Mounjaro, which treats diabetes but can also reportedly help patients lose weight. Eli Lilly’s other medical products treat cancer and immunological diseases.

 

General Motors is one of the largest auto manufacturers in the country and around the world. Headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, it controls all aspects of its vehicle production, including the tech side. Common tech roles at the company include data analysts, software developers and full-stack engineers.

 

With the rise and proliferation of AI, NVIDIA has become one of the fastest-growing companies in the world. The company designs AI semiconductors, including the Blackwell superchip, to handle the computing intensity required to train large language models. Recently, NVIDIA has rivaled Apple and Microsoft as the most valuable company in market capitalization.

 

Founded in 1886, Johnson & Johnson is a prominent pharmaceutical and biotechnology company in the U.S. Throughout the years, the company has researched oncology treatments to cure cancers and developed a bevy of treatments across a wide range of illnesses. 

 

Walmart is a multinational retailer with over 2.3 million employees. Known for selling groceries and consumer products, the company has many locations and fulfillment centers, but it also operates a tech office in Silicon Valley. The office, called Walmart Labs, hires software engineers, data scientists and IT professionals to manage the organization’s commerce offerings.

 

GE Aerospace designs engines for commercial and defense aircraft. Its commercial products aim to reduce CO2 emissions through its fuel-efficient designs. Apart from its mechanical developments, GE Aerospace provides the aviation industry with SaaS products that provide analytic solutions for areas like fuel efficiency and flight paths.

 

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is the parent company of several other social media platforms including Instagram and Whatsapp. It employs over 67,000 people across its brands. In addition to its social sites, Meta has innovated in virtual reality through its Oculus hardware and launched an open-source AI model.

 

Google is one of the largest tech employers, and the company has its hands in just about everything. With around 180,000 employees, the company has developed its well-known products like Search, Gmail, Drive, Maps and Gemini, but it also supports other projects like Waymo, an autonomous ride-hailing platform.  And on the hardware side of its business, Google manufactures Pixel phones and a number of accessories. 

 

Visa is headquartered in San Francisco and works with many of the world’s largest banks and companies. It provides payment processing services, which move electronic funds across accounts with Visa-branded credit and debit cards.

 

IBM is one of the world’s largest software and semiconductor companies, with operations around the world. Its software is used across industries and supports artificial intelligence, data solutions, IT automation and more. Meanwhile, its semiconductor work has helped advance enterprise AI. 

 

Apple has developed some of the most influential hardware of the twenty-first century, completely upending our relationship to technology. The company emerged from Los Altos, California, in the late 1970s, and today it is one of the most valuable corporations in the world with offices in Silicon Valley, Seattle, Austin, New York, not to mention a number of other national and international locations. Besides hardware, Apple provides media platforms through its TV, music, podcast and news offerings.

 

Microsoft is one of the largest and most product-diversified technology companies in the world. It is most known for developing the Windows operating system and its productivity platforms, such as Teams, Outlook and Office. However, the company has also ventured into artificial intelligence, gaming and hardware.

 

BAE Systems is a global defense manufacturer that uses advanced technology, like FPGAs, in its products. With a large presence in the U.S., the company develops everything from computer chips to fighter jets and missile defense systems. In addition to hardware, BAE Systems also focuses on software, contributing to intelligence platforms and cybersecurity solutions.

 

Broadcom semiconductors and electrical components are used across data centers and telecommunications. Founded in 1961, the company began as a division of Hewlett-Parkard, or HP, and eventually spun off into its own entity and is now a member of the Fortune 500.

 

John Deere is known nationally for its agricultural machinery and heavy equipment and is a high-ranking company in the Fortune 500 index. To develop its products, the company relies on its tech talent to develop sensing and automation capabilities for its equipment. John Deere is headquartered in Moline, Illinois, with offices in several U.S. tech hubs and abroad.

 

Cognizant is a Fortune 500 company that works with clients in most industries and has over 300,000 employees. The company specializes in developing tech products to help its customers modernize their operations. Some of the products Cognizant has developed include generative AI platforms, automation software and cybersecurity solutions.

 

With over 400,000 employees around the world, Concentrix is one of the largest software development companies in the U.S. It works with some of the biggest companies in the world, including the Marriott Corporation and Merck, and helps build end-to-end digital solutions. Concentrix is headquartered in Newark, California.

 

Amazon is a tech giant that specializes in e-commerce and cloud computing. Through its online marketplace, the company sells a wide range of products and has even moved into healthcare and pharmaceutical offerings. Many also use Amazon’s AWS service to host their websites, data servers and more. Amazon has over 1.5 million employees around the world. 

 

McDonald’s is a household name in over 100 countries. Despite being known predominantly for its fast-casual dining, the company is also a large tech employer around the world. It hires software engineers who build digital technologies to optimize operations across the organization. McDonald’s also hires product managers, data scientists and quality engineers.

 

Mondelēz International is the food and beverage company behind popular brands like Chips Ahoy! and Oreo. With over 90,000 employees, the company is a large employer in the U.S. and around the world, with operations around Latin America and Europe.
