Twelve is the magic number.

It’s the average number of jobs that people have in their lifetime, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

But what makes someone change jobs? Well, that depends on a lot of factors — such as where someone lives, age and economic status. For example, Gallup found that only about a third of millennials are engaged at work and are emotionally connected to their job.

There are also a wide array of factors that keep someone at a job. Financial stability is a top reason around the world, but so are company values. LinkedIn found that company values are important for professionals all around the world; 59 percent of respondents in Europe won’t work for an organization that doesn’t share their values.

The day-to-day tasks, perks and relationships are also key. Pew Research Center found that about half of workers are “satisfied with their day-to-day tasks, the amount of feedback they receive from their manager or supervisor on how they’re doing their job and the benefits their employer provides, such as health insurance and paid time off.”

As we head into September and post-summer job seeking gets serious, Built In found 20 tech companies that are making a point to offer coveted perks and professional development opportunities that help employees grow.
