The VP, Underwriter is responsible for the analysis, production and marketing of property reinsurance, predominantly Property Catastrophe Lines. This is individual will have a strong Property Catastrophe Excess of Loss background, with established broker and client relationships. This individual will need to garner credibility for this expertise both inside and outside the organization. They may also act as a trainer, leader and/or manager of risk analysts or junior underwriters.

Responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the development of a profitable book of business.

  • Handle day-to-day underwriting.

  • Focus primarily on renewal vs’s independently developing book.

  • Support larger more complex deals managed by the Senior Vice President.

  • Develop and manage relationships with clients, brokers, and catastrophe model vendors by meeting regularly with clients and brokers, which may include frequent dinner meetings and overseas travel.

  • Obtain supplemental underwriting information, analyze and interpret coverages, and negotiable final terms.

  • Inform on market trends for international Cat and Retro Excess of Loss and report these portfolios.

  • Maintain a high level of expertise and product knowledge to serve as a resource for clients and staff.

  • Identify, design, and drive marketing synergies, by developing creative solutions to clients problems.

  • Maximize use of RenRe risk and underwriting tools and analytics; enhances the risk management culture within the team.

  • Maintain ongoing, self-directed professional development and study.

  • May manage, mentor, train and develop analysts.

  • Prioritize expense management.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

  • A university degree is essential with emphasis on science, engineering, economics, math, statistical techniques or simulation.

  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience working in progressively senior catastrophe modelling or actuarial roles at a sophisticated re/insurer, reinsurance broker, or a vendor catastrophe modelling firm.

  • Has a deep understanding of policy forms, reinsurance pricing schemes and the role and impact of actuarial, finance and claims in the underwriting process.

  • Thorough knowledge of, and experience using, the vendor catastrophe models (RMS, AIR, EQE) and internal proprietary tools, and a proven ability to critically evaluate complex model results and deconstruct the vendor models.
