Job Description

The Virtual Desktop Engineer is responsible for the design, development, maintenance, and support of the virtual desktop environment at STCU. This position provides second and third tier support for the VDI environments and focuses on designing and support of high-level system architectures to address emerging organizational needs while providing friendly, service oriented, and knowledgeable support for all employees.

  • Deliver an exceptional end user experience in the VDI environment by designing and enhancing virtual desktop platforms and capabilities to meet current and future organizational and business unit needs and requirements.


  • Manage overall VDI enhancements and initiatives by developing and deploying core operating systems, applications, and services to improve the capabilities and scope of our VDI platforms. Design and implement processes to ensure supportability, scalability, high availability, and disaster recovery capabilities for all virtualized systems.
  • Support VDI operations by troubleshooting issues and focusing on root cause identification, analysis and remediations and proactively identify and resolve challenges to ensure we meet or exceed established operations performance indicators. Create, manage, deploy and maintain OS images for VDI environments, applications packages, and perform routine and emergency threat and vulnerability mitigation as needed.
  • Provide support and execution of strategic and operational initiatives by actively contributing to assigned projects as an engaged project team member.

Other Essential Functions

  • Maintain advanced knowledge relative to the administration, engineering, and implementation of virtual desktop infrastructure-related technologies by completing established training curriculums and relevant skills training. Promote knowledge capture and distribution by creating and maintaining technical support knowledgebase articles, self-service guides and solution documentation in a central repository adhering to established standards and providing training and support for members of the IT team.
  • Identify and implement process improvements and establish and enforce best practices with a focus on employee experience, continuous improvement and future state needs.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of product roadmaps for included platforms to ensure proactive identification, evaluation and implementation of solutions to address emerging needs. Identify key capabilities, capacities, and enhancements for related platforms and deploy. Assist in defining and reporting of key performance metrics on responsible systems and services.
  • Assist with other domain services and VMware server infrastructure tasks to ensure the highest degree of overall system security and availability. Activities may include patching server operating systems, deploying dates and patches to operating systems and virtual infrastructure, performing backup\restore operations, and administering user requests.
  • Contribute to the development of STCU’s culture and strategic vision; the achievement of organizational goals; supporting and demonstrating STCU Core Values. 

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in IT/IS or equivalent combination of years of experience and education required.

Certifications: VMWare Certifications including Desktop Management, vSphere Install, Configure and Manage preferred.

Job Experience: Minimum five years’ experience developing, supporting and managing deployments within a VMWare Horizon Environment required. Familiarity with Instant Clone VDI, Application Virtualization, OS Image Development, Horizon Client and end user computing and troubleshooting in the virtual space required.

Software Skills: Experience with VMWare vSphere, vCenter, Horizon Instant Clone and Application Virtualization using AppVolumes, Dynamic Environment Manager (DEM) configuration, Wyse Management, SAN Operations, Windows 10\11, Office 365 applications, Edge browser, and remote support and diagnostic tools used for troubleshooting and supporting VDI applications in a 500+ user environment.

Equipment Skills: Advanced familiarity with thin clients, SAN, Networking, Host and Server operations. 

Physical Demands: Must be able to regularly talk, hear and operate a computer, keyboard and mouse and occasionally lift, pull/push and carry up to 25 pounds with accommodations.

Work Conditions: Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds at a low or moderate level consistent with an office setting. Exposure to high-stress, fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.

Travel Demands: Reliable transportation is required due to regular travel to STCU Branches and other locations within the area. Limited travel for conferences/training may be required.

Other: Perform additional duties as assigned for the efficient operation of the department and the organization. This includes the possibility of being assigned temporarily to other locations.
