Job Summary

This position is responsible for the effective management of selected ancillary operations within a specific Memorial Hermann Hospital. Responsibilities include direction and decision-making, financial performance, compliance with regulatory agencies, patient satisfaction, productivity and the promotion of Partners-In-Caring, while ensuring maximum efficiency and effectiveness. Additionally, this position is responsible for promoting positive relations among the medical staff and hospital personnel, and assumes responsibility, along with the Chief Nursing Officer and VP, Finance of administration in the absence of the Hospital CEO. The incumbent also participates in system-wide initiatives to promote efficiencies and cooperation across system divisions.Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or other applicable area of study is required

Licenses/Certifications: Board Certification in Healthcare Management preferred

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • Five (5) years of progressive management experience in a healthcare setting, with a proven track record of successfully leading multiple hospital departments is required

Principal Accountabilities

Financial Management

  • Assures that revenue, expenses, contribution margin and FTE’s meet or are favorable to budget.  The incumbent works with his/her direct reports to prepare and submit budgets completely and on time, knows and understands the details of the budget reports, forecasts and accurately  projects expenses; takes corrective action to address negative variances; identifies and proposes capital budget items appropriately; prepares adequate capital equipment proposal and justification, continually improve efficiency and reduce cost.

Performance Improvement 

  • Assures a technically competent staff and services maintaining a high quality and service oriented reputation for the departments.  The incumbent meets hospital requirements for Quality Assurance and contributes to the development, communication and maintenance of the hospital safety program.  The incumbent serves as Director accountable for staff education and participates and supports CQI process.

Regulatory Accreditation Standards 

  • Ensures that compliance and accreditation standards are met in all areas of responsibility. 
  • Develops and maintains departmental policy and procedures, and complies with all applicable regulatory requirements and standards

Leadership 

  • Establishes clear performance expectations for areas of operation. 
  • Works with managers/supervisors to establish scope of service, goals and develop the strategic plan for the areas he/she works with.
  • Stays up to date on new developments in the field and incorporates such in the departments’ scope of service. 
  • Ensures the development and execution of plans for staff recruitment, retention, and development, avoiding the use of contract staff.   
  • The VP, Operations is part of the Hospital Senior Management team and reports directly to the Hospital CEO and participates in all long-term and short-term strategic planning for the hospital. 
  • The incumbent has administrative responsibility for Ancillary Services within the hospital which may include (but is not limited to): Ambulatory Services, Imaging, Patient Transportation, Laboratory Services, Food & Nutrition, Pharmacy, Therapeutic Services, and Medical Records. Provides direction and support to these departments along with budgetary compliance, personnel management, and quality improvement.  The incumbent also takes a leadership role in interdepartmental matters, which advance the hospital and the system.
  • The incumbent provides Administrative representation in Medical Staff meetings.  In this role, the VP, Operations is responsible for implementing actions directed by these groups, through coordination of various multidisciplinary work groups or through program development and policies and procedures.  The incumbent is accountable for communication, investigation and follow-up activities prior to all committee activities and the documentation of related actions and results. 
  • The VP, Operations serves on various system committees and projects to share in decision-making concerning the delivery of care and operations of the hospital.  The incumbent assists the Hospital CEO with project meeting and performs special duties as assigned.  The incumbent shares responsibilities with the Hospital Chief Nursing Officer and Hospital VP, Finance in the absence of the Hospital CEO.
  • The VP, Operations helps prepare and coordinate the total hospital capital and operational budget based upon corporate guidelines and departmental budgets prepared by the department managers.  After final approval of budgets by the Board of Trustees, the VP, Operations reviews with departmental managers, monthly actual vs. budgeted expenditures and revenues; assembles data relative to the phases of hospital activities and provides financial/statistical feedback to the CEO on a monthly basis.
  • The incumbent interacts daily with medical staff members to develop and maintain effective relationships with the medical staff; ensures that medical staff problems/concerns are addressed and that the hospital CEO is informed of problems which may adversely affect hospital operations and medical staff relations.
  • The incumbent interprets corporate, hospital and departmental policies, objectives and operational procedures to Medical Staff members, department managers, employees, patients and visitors.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Demonstrates commitment to caring for every member of our community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences. Models Memorial Hermann’s service standards by providing safe, caring, personalized and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues.
