Job Summary

Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Value Stream Manager (VSM) oversees the Order Fulfillment Process (from quoting through shipping and invoicing) for their assigned market. The VSM is also responsible for the development and performance of the plant personnel that work in their value stream. Responsible for the direction and coordination of all production operations in their respective facility through subordinate supervisors and/or team leads. Subordinate functions include but are not limited to all of the following; assembly operations, machining operations, processing, treating, packaging and shipping.

Summary of Essential Job Functions

  • Oversee, monitor, and establish continuous improvement for the day to day manufacturing process:
  • Ensure a safe working environment for manufacturing personnel by active participation in Safety Gemba walks, near miss and workplace accident investigations
  • Review cost data to streamline processes and lower manufacturing costs
  • Recommend revision of methods, equipment, tooling and/or materials to maintain maximum quality and efficiency in performance of production personnel, while minimizing costs and lead times
  • Achieve manufacturing goals for quality, delivery reliability, order fill time, inventory as 5 of sales, utilization, and efficiency
  • Ensure compliance with The Gund Company’s Quality Management System, and all federal, state, and local government regulations
  • Share best practices across the company that have been developed locally while adopting best practices from other facilities to insure we standardize processes across facilities at the best practice level
  • Lead kaizens and train direct reports to lead kaizens to solve business problems
  • Implement visual management systems to facilitate the order fulfillment process and manage the value stream through the SDB, VLC and DDBs
  • Grow sales by coordinating with customer service, business development, estimating and sales personnel to:
  • Appropriately address technical product inquiries
  • Participate in root cause analysis of customer returns and complaints 
  • Resolve backorders in a timely manner
  • Provide manufacturing expertise to a new product development
  • Maintain the facility in tour-ready condition so customers have confidence in our ability to meet their needs during periodic visits 
  • Drive and maximize production throughput in a manner that meets customer specifications and company profitability goals.
  • Work with plant leadership to set shift schedules and assign production personnel to meet customer demand
  • Insure the availability of necessary resources including personnel, tooling, equipment, facilities, programming and raw material
  • Lead the NCM process to reduce rework and eliminate customer complaints
  • Work with the plant leadership team to eliminate waste throughout the order fulfillment process
  • Maximize the profitability of the value stream:
  • Participate in the gross profit review process to eliminate money losing jobs and insure continuous improvement of the estimating process
  • Develop and implement budget for the assigned value stream  
  • Monitor costs to budget for assigned general ledger accounts
  • Ensure budgetary guidelines are met and provide actions to rectify variances 
  • Provide guidance, feedback and positive behavior modeling to hold employees, colleagues and internal stakeholders accountable to the company’s Take Care of Each Other cultural value:
  • Establish expectations for subordinates and monitor performance 
  • Ensure that team members are properly qualified and trained
  • Provide continuous feedback, both in recognition of achievements and areas of improvement; and utilize the IDP process to help team members meet their developmental goals
  • Engage in proactive conflict resolution and collaboration through courageous conversations
  • Assist and oversee all hiring, promotions, recognition, discipline, and performance management within assigned value stream
  • Develop direct reports to allow them to achieve their personal and professional goals.

Requirements

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Ability to lead and influence people and teams
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both verbally and in writing
  • Very good math skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Technically competent and able to provide clear direction.

Education and Experience

  • A bachelor's degree in technical field and four years of experience in management, or any similar combination of education and experience is required.  
  • At least two years of experience in a manufacturing industry is required.  
  • Knowledge of Quality Concepts (i.e. SPC, TQM, JIT) and Quality Systems (i.e. ISO 9000, Six Sigma, Zero Defects) is preferred.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stand; walk and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.

The work environment is a combination of office, manufacturing and warehouse.
