About Clair

If you can send your friends money in seconds, why does it still take your employer two weeks to send your paycheck?

At Clair, we are on a mission to create financial freedom for America's workers by giving them a digital banking platform that allows them to get paid as soon as they clock out of work. But we're not just another digital bank or on-demand pay provider. We meet Americans at their place of work by embedding our products within the scheduling, workforce management, and payroll apps they already use every day.

The Role

We’re looking for a UXR who is equally comfortable thinking strategically about what we need to learn as they are rolling up their sleeves to conduct the research themselves.

You will play fundamental role in building on Clair’s existing research repository, and evolving the foundation of our research function.

You’ll work closely with Product, Design, Data, and other teams to identify the questions that matter most, develop the right research approach, and turn customer insights into action. You’ll conduct everything from foundational and generative research to usability testing, concept testing, prototype validation, and ongoing customer discovery.

Because our products are deeply connected to people's financial lives, we’re particularly interested in someone who understands how personal, emotional, and nuanced financial decisions can be. Experience researching users in fintech, banking, financial services, or other products involving sensitive or complex financial decisions is strongly preferred.

This person should also have an understanding of product design and prototyping. You do not need to be a full-time product designer, but you should be highly comfortable working in Figma, evaluating prototypes, and partnering with designers to create and test concepts with users.

What You'll DoBuild Clair's User Research Foundation
  • Establish and evolve Clair's user research practice, processes, tools, and approach.

  • Develop a strategic understanding of who our users are, what they need, and where the biggest opportunities exist.

  • Help create a research roadmap that balances foundational learning with the immediate needs of the product organization.

  • Build scalable processes for recruiting, engaging, and learning from users.

  • Establish a centralized approach for capturing, synthesizing, and regularly sharing customer insights across the company.

  • Help ensure that user insights are consistently incorporated into product strategy, prioritization, and decision-making.

Conduct Research
  • Plan and execute qualitative and quantitative research across the product development lifecycle.

  • Conduct user interviews, usability testing, concept testing, prototype testing, surveys, diary studies, and other research methods as appropriate.

  • Test early-stage ideas and concepts before significant product or engineering investment is made.

  • Work directly with Design to test prototypes and iterate quickly based on user feedback.

  • Identify the right research methodology for the question—not simply default to the same approach every time.

  • Conduct both proactive research that informs longer-term strategy and tactical research that helps teams make near-term product decisions.

Partner with Product and Design
  • Work closely with Product Managers and Product Designers to identify the most important customer questions and opportunities.

  • Help shape product strategy by bringing a strong understanding of user needs, behaviors, motivations, and pain points.

  • Partner with designers throughout the design process, from early concepts through prototype testing and post-launch learning.

  • Be comfortable using Figma to review, understand, and test product concepts and prototypes.

  • Provide feedback on researchability and usability throughout the product development process.

  • Help teams move from "what are users saying?" to "what should we do about it?"

Turn Insights Into Action
  • Synthesize complex research findings into clear, actionable insights and recommendations.

  • Tell compelling stories with research that help teams understand not just what users do, but why.

  • Identify patterns across individual research projects to surface broader product and business opportunities.

  • Communicate findings in ways that influence product decisions and drive action.

  • Build strong relationships across the organization and become a trusted voice for the customer.

What Success Looks Like

In your first 90 days, you will:

  • Develop a deep understanding of Clair, our products, our users, and the financial problems we're trying to solve.

  • Build strong relationships with Product, Design, Data, and other key stakeholders.

  • Evaluate our current approach to customer insights and identify gaps and opportunities.

  • Begin conducting high-priority research to support active product initiatives.

  • Establish a clear point of view on where research can have the greatest impact.

  • Start building the foundation for a scalable user research practice.

  • Create a research roadmap that informs both product strategy and execution.

Within your first 6–12 months, you will:

  • Establish a clear and trusted user research function.

  • Build repeatable processes for recruiting and engaging users.

  • Help teams validate concepts and prototypes before significant investment.

  • Establish a clear process for sharing and operationalizing customer insights.

  • Become a trusted strategic partner to Product and Design leadership.

  • Demonstrate measurable impact on product decisions, customer experience, and product outcomes.

What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of experience in User Research, UX Research, Product Research, or a related discipline.

  • Experience working in a fast-paced technology company or startup environment.

  • Experience conducting research across the full product development lifecycle, from early discovery through usability testing and post-launch evaluation.

  • Strong qualitative research skills, including user interviews, usability testing, and concept testing.

  • Strong quantitative research skills, including experience designing and conducting surveys, analyzing massive user data sets to uncover patterns, and other scalable research methods.

  • Product design fluency and hands-on experience working with Figma and testing product concepts and prototypes.

  • Experience partnering closely with Product Managers and Product Designers.

  • Demonstrated ability to turn research findings into clear recommendations that influence product decisions.

  • Comfortable building processes and operating in ambiguity.

  • Strong communication and storytelling skills.

  • Experience working with financial products, fintech, banking, financial services, or products involving users' money, financial decision-making, or other sensitive personal topics is strongly preferred.

The Person We're Looking For

You are both a strategist and a doer.

You can step back and ask, What do we need to understand about our users to make better product decisions over the next year?—and then turn around and personally recruit participants, write the discussion guide, conduct the interviews, synthesize the findings, and present your recommendations.

You don't wait for a perfectly formed research request. You know how to identify unanswered questions, uncover opportunities, and help teams understand what they should learn next.

You have strong product instincts and are comfortable getting into the details. You understand how products are designed, you're comfortable navigating and working with Figma prototypes, and you enjoy testing ideas early and often.

Most importantly, you believe that research should drive action.

You're not interested in producing insights that live in a slide deck or repository. You want to see your work shape products, influence strategy, and ultimately create better experiences for the people using them.
