Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is seeking a creative & talented Associate User Experience Designer to help invent the future of electric power. We develop critical products that provide the main interface for protecting, controlling, monitoring & analyzing the power grid. As an Associate User Experience Designer, you will play a key role in our business by inventing innovative ways to display & interact with the power system via software.
A user centered design philosophy is essential to meeting the unique needs of our users. As a member of the UX Design Team, you will find yourself working alongside and collaborating with other UX Designers, User Researchers, Product Managers, and Software Developers. Your flexibility and willingness to assist where needed, learn a variety of new skills, communicate with a wide variety of teammates, and work on multiple projects simultaneously is crucial.
The ideal candidate should be passionate about solving complex Enterprise UX problems, working in a technical design environment, have experience designing user interfaces, be expert and detailed in their craft and champion the user’s needs in all cases. They will be adept at transforming complex tasks into intuitive workflows, converting complex information into accessible and rich data visualization, taming complex systems with elegant information architecture, and inventing new ways to perceive, predict & interact with the electric power grid.
As a User Experience Designer, a typical day might include the following:
- End-to-end design of software products with world-class user experience.
- Participating in an environment of open collaboration, critique, and communication.
- Applying user experience design and validation principles & techniques.
- Applying visual design and communications principles & techniques.
- Developing moderate expertise in at least one SEL-specific problem domain.
- Participating in conducting user experience research and validation.
- Designing solutions to a wide range of complex problems requiring UX creativity and ingenuity.
- Working under general supervision of Design Leads, following established procedures.
This job might be for you if:
- You have a BA/BS degree in interaction, graphic or visual communications design, human computer interaction, or a related field.
- You have 2+ years of demonstrable experience in designing, prototyping, and testing user interfaces for one or both of the following areas:
- Web, mobile, and/or desktop applications
- Hardware and embedded hardware displays
- You have full use experience with graphic design, interaction design and display design principles.
- You have full use experience with the methodologies and techniques of user experience design.
- You have a moderate understanding of user experience research methods, including how to participate and integrate research results.
Required Qualifications:
- BA/BS degree in interaction, graphic or visual communications design, human computer interaction, or a related field.
- Basic experience with graphic design, interaction design and display design principles.
- Basic experience with the methodologies and techniques of user experience design.
- Basic understanding of user experience research methods.
- Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills.
- Ability to learn new skills, assume new responsibilities, and learn sophisticated problem domains.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with UX design in sophisticated problem domains.

Pay Range Data: $84,200 - $112,300 annually
We set starting pay based on job-related factors such as your experience, training, knowledge, and skills. We are looking to fill this position at the Associate level, and we welcome applicants with a range of experience. Depending on your background, we may consider you for a different level, with compensation aligned accordingly.
Associate User Experience Designer: $82,000 - $122,900 annually
User Experience Designer: $89,400 - $134,100 annually
Lead User Experience Designer: $107,600 - $161,500 annually
