The Role

About Us

Working in technology at Elsevier means that your work really does matter – it changes lives. And you’ll see the real-world impact of your day-to-day efforts.

Our technologists have applied new machine learning models to reduce gender biases against women in academia and developed technology to help medical professionals more accurately diagnose conditions that may have otherwise been missed. Whether you’re supporting the business to be more efficient, building better infrastructure to help things run more smoothly, or if you’re part of a team creating products for the customers we serve, there’s always a new challenge you’ll be helping to solve.

About the Team

The Journal Branded Solutions (JBS) team is responsible for Elsevier’s journal platform that powers over 500 medical and scientific journals, including prestigious titles like Cell Press and The Lancet. We are a multidisciplinary group of designers, developers, and product professionals dedicated to creating intuitive, accessible, and engaging digital experiences that support scientific discovery and global knowledge sharing.

We work collaboratively to improve the way researchers, students, and healthcare professionals interact with trusted research content. Our team values innovation, inclusivity, and continuous learning, and we are passionate about delivering high-quality solutions that make a real-world impact.

About the Role

We are seeking a UX Designer I & Front-End Developer (Hybrid Role) to join the JBS team. This position blends UX design and front-end development responsibilities. You’ll participate in user research and design thinking activities, create intuitive interface designs, and bring them to life in code.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their career who is passionate about crafting exceptional digital experiences and eager to grow across both UX design and front-end development disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with product, research, and engineering teams to define user needs and translate them into intuitive solutions.

  • Design user flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes using Figma.

  • Build responsive, accessible, and maintainable interfaces using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

  • Translate UX designs into production-ready code with pixel-perfect accuracy.

  • Integrate APIs and dynamic data into front-end experiences.

  • Apply user-centered design principles, accessibility standards (WCAG), and development best practices.

  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to performance, usability, and accessibility improvements.

  • Support A/B testing and optimization using tools like Adobe Target.

Requirements

  • 1–3 years of experience in UX design and/or front-end development (internships or project work acceptable).

  • Proficiency with Figma for design and prototyping.

  • Strong understanding of HTML5, CSS3 (SASS/LESS), and JavaScript.

  • Familiarity with modern JavaScript frameworks.

  • Knowledge of responsive design, cross-browser compatibility, and web accessibility (WCAG).

  • Understanding of user-centered design principles, usability testing, and iteration cycles.

  • Experience working with design systems or component libraries is a plus.

  • Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and a proactive, collaborative mindset.
