Could you be our next Underwriter II? Globe Life is looking for an Underwriter II to join the team!
This role is responsible for evaluating life insurance applications to determine risk classification and policy disposition (standard, rated, or declined) in accordance with established underwriting guidelines. It requires implementation of underwriting policies and procedures across new business processing and interdepartmental workflows. Essential functions include interpreting medical terminology and prescription data, utilizing the Swiss Re Underwriting Manual, and analyzing Risk Score, MIB reports, motor vehicle records, phone call results, laboratory results, paramedical exams, and medical records to support sound underwriting decisions.
This is a remote/work-from-home position.
What You Will Do:
- Conduct comprehensive risk assessment of life insurance applications, including trial submissions, to determine appropriate underwriting classifications (standard issue, rated, or decline) in accordance with established guidelines and senior underwriter oversight.
- Execute underwriting policies and procedures governing new business processing and departmental workflows.
- Apply medical underwriting standards utilizing the Swiss Re Underwriting Manual and proprietary AIL company guidelines.
- Perform MIB code reporting and analysis to support risk evaluation processes.
- Analyze and interpret oral fluid test results for underwriting consideration.
- Assess agent verification calls and supplementary underwriting telephone interviews to validate application information.
- Evaluate motor vehicle records (MVRs) to determine risk factors and driving history patterns.
- Analyze prescription drug histories and risk score to identify underlying health conditions and assess medical risk.
- Review, abstract, and evaluate attending physician statements (APSs) and medical records.
- Assess paramedical examination findings and laboratory test results for underwriting decisions.
- Address customer service inquiries and provide detailed explanations regarding underwriting determinations.
- Evaluate medical information associated with reopens, policy modifications, add-ons, and reinstatement and reissue requests.
- Review and resolve escalated cases referred by underwriting staff.
- Contribute to the professional development of underwriting team members and screeners through training and mentorship activities.
- Provide cross-functional support to other underwriting units as directed by department leadership.
What You Can Bring:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework preferred. A combination of experience and education will be considered.
- 1-2 years of experience as an Underwriter trainee or Jr. Underwriter.
- Must be actively pursuing the LOMA Underwriting (UND) designation; LOMA 280 & 290 strongly recommended within 1 year, and pursuit of FMLI recommended.
- Knowledge of medical terminology is a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong ability to multi-task with keen attention to detail.
- Basic math skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including strong Excel skills.
- Quick learner with a strong ability to adapt and retain new information.
