Job Summary
To perform diagnostic general and vascular ultrasound examinations, analyze images, and communicate findings to interpreting physician for diagnosis and treatment by attending physicians. To ensure that ultrasound examination is of acceptable quality and that equipment is functioning properly. The ultrasound technologist is responsible for some clerical duties in the department.
Essential Functions

  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.

  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with privacy laws (HIPPA) and facility policies and procedures.

  • Perform general and vascular ultrasound procedures according to department protocols in a timely and efficient manner. Provide technical assistance during surgical procedures. Accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.

  • Verify accuracy of patient demographic information. Review patient medical history and results of other diagnostic tests to ensure proper exam is performed. Coordinates exams with other departments if necessary.

  • Apply independent judgment during the ultrasound examination to ensure appropriate transducer and ultrasound settings are selected as well as appropriate anatomical, pathological, and clinical conditions are accurately captured in the examination images. As necessary, acquire additional ultrasound imaging to facilitate optimum diagnostic results for the interpretating physician.

  • Review examination images, analyze examination results, and prepare preliminary findings for interpreting physician.

  • Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct ultrasound examinations in accordance with infectious disease, sterilization and patient safety, protocols, policies, and procedures.

  • Abides by, and maintains a working knowledge of institutional policy, ACR policy and TJC policy on patient safety goals and guidelines.

  • Assist with education and training of sonography students, new staff members and physician residents.

  • Provide patient services consistent with the Scope of Practice and Clinical Standards for the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.

Legacy Essential Functions

  • Verifies and Records identification information. Enters appropriate information into patients IDX radiology computer file and film file.

  • Discusses test results with physicians or other department personnel. Repeats process as necessary.

  • Maintains equipment, performs safety and quality control checks and notifies Manager of any discrepancies found.

  • Provides physician with any technical knowledge concerning an examination performed to aid in their interpretation of the exam.

  • Provides technical assistance during for surgical and aspiration procedures.

  • Is proficient in obtaining a clinical history to guide the diagnostic process and provide clinical information to the Radiologists to support accurate diagnosis.

  • Takes call for all ultrasound and peripheral vascular exams offered by the department.

  • Follows Universal Precautions.

Education

  • Associate's Degree required

  • Graduate of a CAAHEP accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to explain test and procedures to patients and parents, allay apprehensions, and to interact effectively with physicians, patients, parents, and departmental personnel.

  • Basic computer skills to operate a computer efficiently and effectively.

  • Analytical ability necessary to resolve technical problems.

  • Ability to schedule ultrasound examinations throughout assigned work period to ensure day to day operations.

  • Ability to maintain accurate facility reports and records.

  • Ability to prioritize, work independently and manage simultaneous assignments.

  • Ability to be flexible in schedule and adaptable to constant change.

  • An understanding of Children’s Wisconsin health care delivery system and the impact of other health care delivery system on the patient and family.

Licenses and Certifications

  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council required

  • ARDMS-American Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer - The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography

  • Ultrasound Technologist - American gistry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography
