Mō te tūranga | About the role

Join our Palmerston North team as a TTM Engineer  supporting the NZTA IDC across Manawatū-Whanganui.

This is a role with real impact. You’ll help keep people moving and keep them safe by making sure traffic is managed well around roadworks, maintenance activities, and events affecting the network. You’ll assess sites, understand the risks, and work out practical traffic management approaches that support safe delivery and keep the job moving.

You’ll be trusted to give clear advice on staging, timing, and traffic management arrangements, whether that means planning for night works, off-peak delivery, or responding to changing site conditions. It’s good work that matters, with a team that backs each other and takes the work seriously, not ourselves.

Ngā tino kawenga mahi | Key role responsibilities

  • Assess work sites to identify risks to road users, workers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

  • Develop practical temporary traffic management advice based on site conditions, traffic volumes, speed environments, nearby intersections, and surrounding land use.

  • Recommend how works should be staged and when they should take place to balance safety, efficiency, and network performance.

  • Coordinate traffic management crews and subcontractors to ensure setups are implemented correctly and maintained to the required standard.

  • Brief crews on safety and compliance requirements and support a high-standard, low-ego team environment.

  • Work closely with department managers and NZTA to support smooth delivery across the contract.

  • Liaise with emergency services and public transport operators where needed.

  • Respond to field issues such as congestion, incidents, or weather changes with a calm, practical approach.

  • Support monitoring and audits of temporary traffic management operations.

  • Drive continuous improvement across temporary traffic management activities to lift both safety and efficiency.

Kei te kimi mātou i tētahi e whai ana i ēnei pūkenga | We’re looking for someone with

  • Experience in temporary traffic management, roadworks, or civil infrastructure.

  • Strong understanding of road safety, traffic behaviour, and TTM standards.

  • Ability to assess work sites and identify risks for all road users.

  • Experience planning or advising on staging and timing of works, including night works or off-peak periods.

  • Proven ability to coordinate crews and subcontractors in a delivery-focused environment.

  • Strong focus on safety, compliance, and continuous improvement.

  • Confident communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships with managers, NZTA, emergency services, and public transport operators.

  • Solid problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing conditions on site.
