The Test Automation Manager will lead the organization’s transformation towards a culture that prioritizes quality through automation. This role is responsible for establishing and executing the enterprise vision for test automation, ensuring that automated testing becomes a standard, integrated component of all software delivery processes. This role guides and leads an external team of Software Developer Engineers in Test (SDETs) who work closely with the engineering teams to embed automation best practices into their workflows, eliminate manual regression testing where possible, and promote a mindset that values continuous testing and early defect detection.
This role ensures that a robust test architecture exists and enables an effective and cost/resource-efficient test framework, by optimizing test automation through maintaining and enhancing tools, processes, and plans. The Test Automation Manager helps IT achieve the goal of superior test coverage in all environments.
The Test Automation Manager is responsible for ensuring that releases (new development, enhancements, and fixes) meet quality standards through automation of QA and Regression test plans, user expectations through automation of acceptance criteria, and business goals before deployment to production.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Test Planning and Strategy
Develop comprehensive test strategies, define test objectives, and ensure creation of detailed test plans that align with project goals. This includes selecting appropriate testing tools and methodologies for automation.
Prioritize automation of the most impactful testing scenarios, so our test suites remain fast running and provide critical feedback to our engineering teams as quickly as possible.
Automation Development:
Oversee the design and development of automated test scripts and frameworks. Ensure that automation efforts are efficient and effective in identifying defects early in the development cycle.
Monitoring and Reporting:
Track testing progress and results, providing regular updates to stakeholders. Analyze test results to identify trends and areas for improvement.
Prepare and present reports on test progress, product quality, results, and risks to management and stakeholders.
Tool Management
Research and recommend appropriate testing tools and frameworks to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
Process Improvement
Maintain and enhance tools and processes in use
Look for opportunities to streamline all testing cycles, including UAT
Process Management
Oversee the entire testing lifecycle, ensuring all test phases are completed, including evaluation of test results.
Ensure that all testing activities meet quality standards and that the final product is free of defects.
Implement best practices for testing and quality assurance.
Documentation
Ensure documentation is maintained and linked to work items, including but not limited to test plans, traceability matrices, test logs, defect reports, test summaries, and signoffs.
Team Leadership
Lead and manage the testing team of SDETs, providing guidance and support to ensure effective execution of testing processes. This includes mentoring team members and fostering a collaborative environment.
Build a team of effective SDETs, hire onshore and offshore as applicable.
Collaboration:
Partner with Product Owners, Developers, BSAs, and business stakeholders to ensure quality and testing scenarios are comprehensive.
Risk Management
Identify and mitigate risks to the testing process and the quality of the release.
Perform other duties, as assigned.
Education, Requirements, Competencies & Values
A bachelor’s degree in computer science or relevant field from an accredited college or university is required.
6- 8 plus years of QA experience within IT, with a minimum of three years of Test Management experience.
A strong understanding of test management processes and best practices.
Deep understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and Agile frameworks, including Scrum, with experience guiding cross-functional teams in applying these principles to improve quality, collaboration, and delivery speed.
Experience designing and implementing test frameworks and enhancing existing test processes.
Experience in testing automation tools set up (e.g. Cucumber, Selenium)
Experience in leading offshore teams and building a collaborative culture is required
Ability to mentor technical teams and foster collaboration toward successful solution delivery.
Comfortable with evaluating technologies in areas of automated testing.
Must be a clear communicator that can collaborate directly with cross-functional IT and business teams to ensure testing is thorough and comprehensive.
The base salary range for this role is $102,000-$138,000. Individual compensation packages are based on a variety of factors that are unique to each candidate including geographic location, skill set, experience, qualifications and education.
