Job Description

The Advising Support Specialist (Part-Time/Temporary) for the federally funded TRIO Talent Search Program will assist in delivering program services to middle and high school students, encouraging them to graduate from high school and pursue postsecondary education. The Specialist’s primary responsibilities include conducting workshop presentations at partner schools and serving as a chaperone for college visits, cultural enrichment events, and other field trips. This position is designed to support full-time Talent Search Advisors in meeting program goals and providing direct services to students.

The Advising Support Specialist will report to the Talent Search Associate Director and work collaboratively with Talent Search staff, school partners, and community partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct group presentations and workshops for students on topics such as study skills, college readiness, and career awareness.
  • Assist with chaperoning students on college visits, cultural enrichment events, and other program-related field trips.
  • Support Advisors in facilitating Talent Search program activities and initiatives at assigned middle and high schools.
  • Serve as a supportive presence for students, encouraging academic success and postsecondary planning.
  • Assist Advisors in building and maintaining relationships with school staff, counselors, and community partners.
  • Provide logistical support for program events, workshops, and activities.
  • Help maintain accurate participation records in accordance with Department of Education guidelines and University policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support Talent Search objectives.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two or more years of college coursework.
  • Experience working with middle and/or high school students in educational, mentoring, or youth development settings.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills; comfortable speaking with groups of students.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model for first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students.
  • Reliability, professionalism, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Valid driver’s license required, and reliable transportation to drive between target schools; ability to travel for field trips and college visits.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, or youth development.
  • Previous experience supporting TRIO or other college access programs.
  • Bilingual skills.

Additional Information

Hourly rate: $18.00 - $20.00

Hours per week: up to 30 with a total expected hours per year of less than 900
