The Machine Learning Department (MLD) at CMU is a leading hub for research and education in artificial intelligence and machine learning. It focuses on developing innovative algorithms and models to address sophisticated problems in diverse fields such as robotics, healthcare, and finance. The department offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs, fostering a collaborative environment that bridges research and applications. Faculty and students frequently collaborate with industry and other areas to push the boundaries of what is possible with machine learning.

We are seeking a Technical Writer II to support the preparation of grant proposals and grant reports.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Writing, editing, and assembling detailed, accurate, and technical documents for submission to government agencies and private funding organizations.
  • Collaborating closely with faculty, researchers, and staff to communicate sophisticated ideas and related fields in a clear and compelling way.
  • Assist in drafting, reviewing, and refining technical proposals to secure funding from federal agencies (e.g., NSF, DARPA, NIH), private foundations, and industry partners.
  • Prepare technical and financial progress reports for funding bodies, summarizing research outcomes, milestones achieved, and future objectives.
  • Manage submission processes and ensure that proposals adhere to requirements of funding agencies, including formatting, page limits, and technical specifications. Coordinate with stakeholders to manage timelines, gather input, and meet submission deadlines for large projects

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience is preferred
  • 3 years proven ability in technical writing, grant writing, or proposal development, ideally in an academic or research setting.
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to balance multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Experience in using generative AI for writing and research assistance.
  • (Preferred) experience with writing in a STEM field, particularly in computer science, engineering or machine learning
  • (Preferred) experienced in writing proposals for large, multi-institutional projects or centers
  • (Preferred) familiarity with research methodologies, data analysis, and statistical techniques commonly used in machine learning research.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered
