Summary:
MediaNews Group seeks a full-time journalist for the Wyoming County Examiner, a weekly community newspaper based in Tunkhannock, PA. This Assistant Editor position will serve as the lead reporter for a fledgling weekly edition while organizing and directing community coverage for a hyper local newspaper and website that serves a diverse and growing county. We’re looking for a strong reporter who can produce quality community coverage of breaking news, including police, courts and business, while identifying and creating interesting and important enterprise and trend stories to captivate and grow readership and audience.
Though journalists currently work from home, the person hired for this position would be expected to relocate to or near Tunkhannock, PA, without relocation assistance.
What you will do:

Aggressively produce news and feature stories that reflect life in growing Wyoming County in the Endless Mountains

Contribute significant breaking-news coverage to daily newspapers in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre

Create weekly content plans that include scheduled event coverage, news features, business stories and more

Work closely with editors at MNG daily newspapers on accountability journalism and projects of interest to readers in Wyoming County

Work in tandem with a Sports Editor and several community columnists to develop and create consistent content

Take initiative to fact-check, run background checks and confirm information before publication

Cultivate beats and sources throughout the county

Engage audience through social media on multiple platforms
What you will bring:

Degree in journalism, communications or equivalent experience and 1 to 3 years of experience as a reporter or content producer

Relevant experience in news reporting and writing, using social media, creating enterprising content

Strong communication skills to connect with sources across an array of beats

Genuine interest and enthusiasm for community journalism and a unique writing voice that speaks to their audience

Understanding of emerging and existing platforms, including web, mobile and print

Professional-level grasp of proper grammar, spelling, punctuation

Ability to multitask and perform in a fast-paced deadline driven environment

Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required
