About the opportunity
The Technical Sales Manager, HID & Forensics is responsible for meeting the needs of the expanding DNA Forensics segment of our Human Identification (HID) business. The position will enhance customer satisfaction and build customer relationships while selling advanced technology products and services in the defined area. Additionally, the Technical Sales Manager will offer proven knowledge in the specialized HID market segment, with strong knowledge of Forensic workflows including collection, extraction, assay technologies, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), and automation.
The Technical Sales Manager is considered within QIAGEN's organization as a key knowledge holder, contributes to the product development process and assists in the integration of new/acquired technology. He or she should be comfortable leading and working in teams, experienced at project management and successful selling at all customer levels. The Technical Sales Manager position works directly with a dedicated HID account management team as well as a Forensic Applications Specialist team, and reports into the Director of HID Sales for North America.
Although opportunities to work outside of a specific region arise, the position focus is currently in QIAGEN HID Midwest region. Territory covers ND, SD, NE, MN, WI, IA, IL, MO, IN, OH, KY, MI, Ontario, Quebec, and eastern Canadian provinces. Candidate ideally located in territory and within commuting distance of a major airport. Willingness to travel up to 60%
Your tasks include
- Sales Revenues / Budgets: Meet/Exceed/Monitor sales targets. Increase sales of QIAGEN products by managing sales across consumables, instrumentation, and service, and develop tactical plans to maximize revenues. Must be comfortable working across internal business functions, i.e. Sales, Marketing, Product Management, Technical, Supply Chain and more.
- Strategy: Implement QIAGEN’s corporate strategy for penetration of the HID customer base. Capture defined key accounts and execute pricing strategy to maintain existing business and develop new business. Disseminate global strategy to develop regional objectives and tactical plans.
- Planning / Forecasting: Responsible for the development/agreement and monitoring of quarterly and annual sales targets, key performance indictors and revenue forecasts. Forecast within accuracy guidelines utilizing Salesforce.com. Perform pre-call planning and/or coordinating with sales team for increased sales effectiveness.
- Business / Markets: Drive and initiate development of new business opportunities. Increase number of strategic partnerships. Enhance customer satisfaction and increase our competitive advantage while building trust and relationships with customers. Maintain and develop strong relationships with key customers/opinion leaders/references.
- Development: Coach and collaborate with less experienced peers so that they have the direction, skills and tools to achieve targets.
- Communication: Organize meetings, communication channels to ensure effective communication across business units. Involve and support sales team members to achieve mutual company goals and financial objectives. Use Salesforce.com database daily for input and output of customer information to increase sales effectiveness. Maintain and develop relationships with key customers. Maintain open and reoccurring communication with your manager and additional business/segment teams.
Your profile
- Individual with a degree in the Life Science area. Advanced degree and/or MS or higher in Forensic Sciences desirable.
- Proven and demonstrated knowledge of HID/Forensics with 5+ years of experience in the field. Should be able to guide customers and troubleshoot through the full HID/Forensic workflow.
- Previous Sales experience desirable, NGS/MPS experience or knowledge highly preferred.
- Knowledge, experiences and relationships within some of the following networks is preferred (e.g.): ASCLD, SWGDAM, and similar.
- Should have a broad understanding of and ability to sell across QIAGEN’s automation portfolio and full portfolio, including experience with extraction, liquid handling assay setup, qPCR, CE analysis, and NGS. Should also have and will maintain knowledge of competitive technology and platforms.
- Able to interact with/educate customers across all levels of the organization, including management levels such as Director and Technical Leader. Should be comfortable giving a technical seminar, oral presentation and/or poster, and leading meetings and sales calls.
The estimated base salary range for this position is $100,000 - $130,000. Compensation will be based on the candidate’s experience, skills, geographic location, and other job-related factors. In addition to base salary, we offer a total compensation package that includes a commission plan and generous benefits.

Skills Required
- Bachelor’s degree in a life science field
- At least 5 years of experience in Human Identification or Forensics
- Knowledge of the complete HID/forensic workflow, including collection, extraction, assay technologies, automation, qPCR, capillary electrophoresis, and sequencing
- Ability to sell and support QIAGEN’s automation and broader product portfolio
