As the firm's State and Local Tax (SALT) lead, you'll oversee AB's state tax function, including direct and indirect tax compliance, controversy, apportionment, and the state components of the income tax provision.

Reporting to the US Tax Director, you'll collaborate with colleagues across Tax, Finance, Accounting, Treasury, Legal, and business teams to support a leading global investment management firm. This position is ideal for a SALT professional from public accounting or industry seeking broader ownership and visibility within an in-house tax function. You'll gain exposure to complex tax and business matters, including transactions and strategic initiatives, while building relationships across the organization and developing your career within AB.

What You’ll Do:

  • Manage state and local direct tax compliance, including income, franchise, and gross receipts tax returns, extensions, and estimated payments.
  • Oversee indirect tax compliance and reporting, including sales and use tax, in coordination with internal stakeholders and external providers.
  • Manage entity-level state filings, including annual reports, registrations, and renewals, to maintain legal entity good standing.
  • Review tax returns, workpapers, and supporting analyses for accuracy, completeness, and timely filing.
  • Lead state and local tax audits, notices, and other controversy matters through resolution.
  • Manage state apportionment, sourcing, and nexus analyses and maintain supporting documentation for filing positions.
  • Partner with business and tax stakeholders to support transactions, restructurings, and other strategic initiatives.
  • Support the state income tax provision under ASC 740, including current tax calculations and uncertain tax positions.
  • Manage external advisors and service providers across compliance, controversy, and special projects.
  • Monitor legislative, regulatory, and judicial developments and assess their impact on the business.
  • Drive process improvements through technology, automation, AI, and enhanced controls.
  • Support special projects and broader Corporate Tax initiatives.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA or JD required; Master of Taxation or Master of Accounting preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive state and local tax experience in public accounting, industry, or a combination of both.
  • Experience with multi-state direct tax compliance, including income, franchise, and gross receipts taxes.
  • Experience with indirect tax compliance and controversy, including sales and use tax.
  • Experience managing state audits, notices, and other controversy matters.
  • Working knowledge of state apportionment, sourcing, and nexus.
  • Strong tax research, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate technical tax matters to non-tax stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and tax research platforms.

The following experience is a plus:

  • Exposure to ASC 740 and state income tax accounting.
  • Participation in transactions, restructurings, and other strategic business initiatives.
  • Experience with partnership, flow-through, or financial services taxation.
  • Experience with coordinating external advisors and service providers.
