Wolfspeed is seeking a highly motivated Tax Manager to join our Corporate Tax team and manage the U.S. income tax function. This role will be responsible for leading income tax accounting under ASC 740, managing U.S. federal and multi-state income tax compliance, overseeing domestic tax audits and controversy matters, and supporting tax planning initiatives. The Tax Manager will play a critical role in the Company's quarterly and annual financial reporting process, partnering closely with Accounting, FP&A, Treasury, Legal, external auditors, and tax advisors to ensure accurate tax reporting and compliance.
The ideal candidate is a technically strong tax professional with public company experience, a solid understanding of ASC 740 income tax accounting and tax reporting requirements, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to translate complex tax matters into meaningful business insights for senior leadership. This position is eligible for remote work within the United States. Occasional travel may be required for team meetings, planning sessions, or other business needs.
The Day-to-Day
Income Tax Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Lead the quarterly and annual income tax provision process in accordance with ASC 740
- Prepare and review U.S. current and deferred income tax calculations
- Manage accounting for uncertain tax positions (FIN 48 / ASC 740-10)
- Perform effective tax rate (ETR) analyses and prepare clear explanations of period-over-period tax rate drivers
- Prepare and review income tax footnote disclosures for SEC filings, including Forms 10-Q and 10-K
- Support quarterly earnings processes by providing tax analyses, forecasts, and executive-level reporting materials
- Coordinate with external auditors during quarterly reviews and year-end audits
U.S. Federal & State Tax Compliance
- Own U.S. federal and multi-state corporate income tax compliance activities, including returns, extensions, estimated tax payments, and related filings
- Manage relationships with external tax service providers responsible for the preparation of U.S. federal and state tax returns
- Review key tax return components, including:
- Schedule M adjustments
- Fixed asset and depreciation calculations
- Federal and state tax credits
- State apportionment and nexus analyses
- Tax return disclosures and supporting schedules
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local tax filing requirements
Tax Audits & Controversy
- Lead U.S. federal, state, and local income tax audits, examinations, notices, and controversy matters
- Manage tax reserves associated with ongoing audits and controversies
Tax Planning & Technical Research
- Support tax planning initiatives designed to optimize the Company's effective tax rate and cash tax position
- Conduct technical research, tax reform analysis, and strategic planning projects and assess the impact on the Company
Internal Controls & Process Improvement
- Support compliance with SOX 404 requirements, including maintaining and enhancing tax-related internal controls
- Collaborate with Internal Audit and external auditors on control testing and documentation
- Identify and implement opportunities to continuously improve tax processes through automation, standardization, and data analytics
- Mentor and develop junior tax professionals while fostering a culture of accountability and operational excellence
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field
- Minimum of 6 years progressive tax experience in public accounting and/or a publicly traded multinational corporation
- CPA certification or active progress towards certification
- Strong technical expertise in:
- ASC 740 Income Tax Accounting
- FIN 48 / Uncertain Tax Positions
- SEC reporting requirements (10-Q and 10-K)
- U.S. Federal & Multi-State Corporate Income Tax Compliance
- Tax audits and controversy management
- Experience managing external tax advisors and service providers
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities under tight quarterly close deadlines
- Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to interact effectively with senior leadership and external auditors
