Key Responsibilities
Object Storage Data Path & S3
- Contribute to features in the ActiveScale data path, helping handle the flow from incoming S3 requests to durable storage across NVMe, HDD, and tape.
- Contribute to the implementation and extension of the S3 API, ensuring correct protocol behavior and efficient request handling.
- Analyze and help improve the latency, throughput, and reliability of the I/O pipeline, developing your Linux profiling and systems-debugging skills as you go.
Durability, Data Placement & Resilience
- Contribute to durability and data-placement work, including erasure coding, and help ensure correctness under failures such as node loss, disk faults, and partial writes.
- Help analyze and improve concurrency and throughput across the request and storage paths.
Scalability & Data Movement
- Contribute to the systems that move and tier data from high-performance NVMe through HDD to the tape cold-storage tier (ActiveScale Cold Storage).
Engineering
- Write clean, well-tested code with unit, component, and integration tests, use CI, take part in design discussions and code reviews, and grow toward independent ownership of components under the guidance of senior engineers.
Required Qualifications
- 3 to 5 years of software development experience using Go, Python, C, C++, or Rust (or equivalent systems-level fundamentals), with a willingness to learn additional languages.
- Hands-on software development experience with concurrent, networked, distributed, or systems-level software.
- Solid Linux fundamentals, including basic debugging and performance analysis, with a willingness to develop deeper profiling and systems-debugging skills.
- Understanding of the basics of concurrency, locking, asynchronous programming, and memory management.
- Understanding of cloud or enterprise storage concepts and familiarity with storage technologies such as HDD, SSD, and NVMe, with an interest in learning about multi-tier storage systems.
- Good communication skills; ability to work in a team environment and with remote colleagues.
- Self-motivated and eager to learn, with a creative problem-solving mindset.
- This is a hybrid role, with in-office work at our Centennial, CO office Tuesday through Thursday.
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience with the Linux I/O subsystem and networking.
- Knowledge of erasure coding principles.
- Experience with object storage.
- Experience with storage protocols and with clustering design and development.
- Experience with APIs and communication protocols such as REST, gRPC, or Thrift.
- Familiarity with OCaml is welcome but not required; parts of the existing ActiveScale codebase are written in it.
- Experience with the Amazon S3 API, SDKs, and tools.
