Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. For years, our awe-inspiring viral videos on YouTube have shown the world what remarkably capable robots can do. We embody cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence in advanced robotics, quickly moving from the research lab into increasingly impactful roles across industrial spaces.
The Systems Engineering, Integration, and Test (SEIT) Department of Boston Dynamics (BD) seeks an experienced Systems Engineer in Test to help verify and validate the most capable humanoid robot system in the world.
This role provides hands-on technical support to a peer group of test engineers and technicians. The team will include mechanical, electrical, and software expertise. The System Electrical Engineer in Test reports to the Verification, Validation, & Test Senior Manager and helps BD continue the development of the most capable full-body-manipulating mobile robots in the world.
How you will make an impact:
Coordinate across electrical, mechanical, firmware, software, and technician teams to validate and integrate complex robotic systems, including the design and oversight of test facilities and control architectures.
Gather test system requirements that enable representative design characterization and verification through application of state-of-the-art test equipment in innovative test system design.
Oversee and execute the integration of testing fixtures and hardware-in-the-loop simulations, including instrumentation, wiring, configurations, and system modeling to predict performance.
Lead the testing and validation of critical robot components and sub-systems, ensuring robust performance through rigorous test plans and system integration.
Contribute to the definition of our system design, integration, and test processes, leveraging experience from industry applications.
Support the review of design artifacts (schematics, layouts, software, bills of materials) from peers or external suppliers, providing expert feedback.
Drive system integration and test activities by contributing to test execution, debugging, and devising innovative solutions to complex challenges.
Collaborate with reliability engineers to develop and execute test specifications for actuators, sensors, and full robotic systems.
Support failure analysis efforts for issues identified during testing, applying a systematic approach to root cause analysis.
Required Skills & Experience:
Bachelor's in Electrical, Mechanical, Software Engineering, or a related field.
Solid engineering fundamentals with hands-on experience in designing, building, and testing complex systems and sub-system test stands used for hardware and software validation.
Demonstrated experience in controls design, system modeling, simulation (e.g., Matlab, Simulink), and software implementation (e.g., C/C++, Python).
Proven experience in the test and debugging of electromechanical systems, including aspects of power electronics, digital and analog electronics, and sensor integration.
General experience in firmware, automation, and developing control algorithms for dynamic systems.
Desirable Skills & Experience:
Master’s or PhD with a strong focus on controls and robotics.
Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing design, implementation, and system integration.
Advanced data analysis, visualization, and system performance estimation.
Experience with reliability and robustness testing methodologies (e.g., DFMEA, DVP&R, DOE) and root cause analysis.
Experience with test systems for dynamic components (e.g., actuators, sensors) and system characterization.
Development of repeatable test procedures that correlate with system performance and operational requirements.
Proficiency with software tools including: Python, C++, Jama, Jira, Google Suite, Matlab, Simulink.
Experience with technical writing, presentation, and design reviews.
Familiarity with simulation environments beyond Matlab/Simulink (e.g., Mujoco).
We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas for this position.
