- Position Summary
The Montessori Classroom Aide (Student Substitute) is an on-call, part-time student worker who provides classroom support and substitute coverage for the Chaminade University Montessori Laboratory School on an as-needed basis. Under the direction of the Administrator and/or Montessori Teacher, the student supports classroom routines, assists with the maintenance of the Montessori prepared environment, helps supervise and redirect children, and performs other duties necessary to support the teaching staff and the safe, orderly operation of the classroom.
The position requires flexibility, reliability, professionalism, and the ability to work collaboratively with Montessori teaching staff. The student will follow established classroom procedures, instructions, licensing requirements, accreditation standards, and University policies while providing temporary classroom support.
- Learning Outcome
The Montessori Classroom Aide (Student Substitute) will:
- Carry out the plans, instructions, and directives of the Administrator and/or Montessori Teacher and comply with applicable licensing, health, safety, and accreditation standards.
- Assist with preparing and maintaining the Montessori prepared environment, including organizing classroom materials and activities and ensuring that the environment remains clean, orderly, aesthetically pleasing, and safe for children.
- Assist with routine classroom tasks, including making or preparing materials and activities, cleaning, sweeping, mopping, dusting, moving furniture, and completing other duties necessary to support the classroom environment.
- Prepare and serve snacks in accordance with classroom procedures and applicable health and safety requirements.
- Monitor and replenish classroom supplies as needed.
Assist teaching staff with classroom routines and transitions and redirect children as appropriate under the direction of the teaching staff. - Support teachers by helping maintain a safe, cooperative, and inclusive classroom environment.
- Attend staff meetings, orientations, and in-service training as applicable or required.
- Develop practical experience in professional communication, classroom support, child supervision, teamwork, organization, and adherence to established procedures.

- Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide on-call classroom support and substitute coverage as scheduled and as needed.
- Follow the classroom plans, routines, procedures, and instructions provided by the Administrator and/or Montessori Teacher.
- Support teaching staff in maintaining a safe, welcoming, respectful, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment.
- Assist with supervising and redirecting children as directed by the teaching staff.
Assist with transitions and classroom routines to help maintain an orderly learning environment. - Assist with preparing, organizing, arranging, and maintaining Montessori classroom materials and activities.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the classroom and prepared environment.
Assist with cleaning, sweeping, mopping, dusting, moving furniture, and other classroom maintenance tasks as needed.
Prepare snacks and assist with routine classroom needs in accordance with established procedures. - Refill and organize classroom supplies.
- Assist with setting up and cleaning up before and after classroom activities.
- Attend school functions, meetings, orientations, and training sessions as requested.
- Communicate clearly and respectfully with teachers, staff, students, and families as appropriate to the position.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, students, staff, and University information.
Report safety concerns, injuries, incidents, or unsafe conditions promptly and appropriately. - Follow all University policies, classroom procedures, and applicable health and safety requirements.
- Perform other similar, comparable, or related duties as assigned or required.

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proof of criminal record clearance.
- Physical examination clearance for working with children ages two through six.
- Current TB screening.
- Membership in the Early Childhood Systems Patch Registry with the qualification of Aide for group child care centers and homes.
- Ability to follow classroom instructions, procedures, and established safety practices.
- Ability to work effectively and respectfully with young children and teaching staff.
- Current enrollment as a Chaminade University student.
Current GPA of at least 2.5/3.0. - Previous experience working with children, in a classroom, child-care, educational, or community setting.
Interest in early childhood education, Montessori education, child development, education, or a related field. - Familiarity with Montessori principles or classroom environments
The Montessori Classroom Aide (Student Substitute) is expected to demonstrate the following competencies:

Prioritizes responsibilities effectively and manages time to support classroom routines, instructional activities, and the needs of teaching staff. - Reliability and Procedural Compliance
Arrives as scheduled, follows substitute procedures and program timelines, and demonstrates flexibility in responding to changing classroom needs. - Accuracy, Confidentiality, and Professional Integrity
Demonstrates attention to detail and quality in assigned work. Maintains confidentiality and conducts all responsibilities with integrity, professionalism, and respect for University and classroom policies.
X. Physical Requirements
The individual must be capable of meeting the physical requirements associated with supporting a Montessori classroom serving young children.
- Must be capable of bending, reaching, and moving safely within the classroom environment.
- Must be capable of running when necessary to respond appropriately to children's needs or safety situations.
- Must be capable of carrying up to 50 pounds.
Must be capable of moving furniture and arranging classroom materials and activities. - Must be capable of standing and walking for prolonged periods of time.
- Must have sufficient finger dexterity to handle classroom materials, supplies, and Montessori activities.
- Must be able to perform physical activities safely and in accordance with applicable University and classroom procedures.
- This is a part-time, non-exempt student worker position.
The position is on-call and work hours will vary based on classroom and departmental needs. - This is a part-time, non-exempt student worker position. Depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the department, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be occasionally required.
- Performs such similar, comparable, or related duties as may be assigned or required
- Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner
