NiSource Internship Program Introduction
NiSource is currently seeking a Summer Sustainability Intern. Successful applicants will become integral members of the department while learning within a team environment, completing meaningful tasks and collaborating with team members and leaders on important projects. This position will be a great opportunity for the candidate desiring to launch their career in the field. Successful applicants will build professional relationships with other interns and all levels of NiSource personnel while participating in rewarding professional development exercises and fun, team-building activities. Interns will obtain a broad overview of NiSource's operations and current events in the utilities industry.
This is a 12-week summer internship program starting in May 2027, for students entering their junior or senior year in fall 2027. The role is based in Columbus, OH. Candidates must reside within 50 miles of the reporting location to be eligible.
Job Summary
The Environmental Policy & Sustainability intern will support the work of the NiSource Environmental Policy & Sustainability team, which is responsible for advancing environmental policy strategy, regulatory engagement, and sustainability initiatives across the company. This internship offers hands-on experience in environmental compliance, policy analysis, reporting, and sustainability program development. The intern will report to the Manager, Environmental Policy and Sustainability, and collaborate with internal business partners across several different teams.
Essential Functions
- Review and analyze federal and state environmental policies and guidelines to support compliance and strategic planning.
- Prepare written summaries of environmental policies and regulations, highlighting potential impacts on business operations.
- Assist in identifying, developing, and enhancing environmental management systems and programs that are both compliant and proactive.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure environmental programs are effectively integrated across business functions.
- Support data collection, analysis, and reporting efforts to internal and external stakeholders, contributing to transparency and regulatory alignment.
- Drive continuous improvement in organizational sustainability practices through data-driven insights and cross-functional collaboration.
- Support internal reporting and documentation efforts related to environmental initiatives and regulatory developments.
- Develop materials to support team meetings and cross-functional collaboration.
Required Qualifications for Position
- Enrolled in a college or university with a focus in Environmental Science, Public Policy, Sustainability, Engineering, or a related field.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Strong writing, research, and organizational skills.
- High-performance individual eager to learn and ready to take ownership of assigned duties.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and cooperatively on teams.

As a public utility, NiSource provides essential services to customers 24/7. Emergency needs can arise at various times throughout the year, including during storm season. Salary Range*:
$17.20 - $29.70*The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate’s skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity.
