The Role
Company Description

Meridian is the largest producer of renewable electricity in Aotearoa and we strive to deliver clean energy for a fairer and healthier world. We only generate electricity from 100% renewable resources – wind, water and sun, because we believe that’s the best way forward for our planet and our communities. And, we’re doing what we can to help Aotearoa reduce their carbon emissions and support others in our generation communities to do the same. We also retail electricity to more than 365,000 homes, businesses and farms across New Zealand through our Meridian and Powershop brands.

Job Description

What you'll be doing:

As a summer intern with Meridian Energy, you'll get the opportunity to work on some of New Zealand's most iconic hydro and wind generation assets, as well as being active in all aspects of the company. The programme will push you to develop real-life business and technical skills.

We only take a small number of interns each year, and we only want the best! In return we’ll make sure you get some great hands-on experience. You’ll be trusted with owning significant projects, and will be supported by a friendly team of experts along the way,  who will help develop your knowledge, skills, and professional profile.

These Christchurch-based roles will also get the opportunity to visit some of our amazing assets!

What you’ll get?

Step into a hands-on, high-impact internship where you’ll explore how data science and analytics are transforming the energy sector. You'll get to experiment with developing intelligent models that detect operational anomalies and track the gradual degradation of asset health and reliability. Through techniques like machine learning, statistical analysis, and pattern recognition, you’ll work on real projects that span everything from tracking usage metrics to building advanced monitoring systems. This is your opportunity to test your skills, push boundaries, and grow - applying your academic knowledge in a real-world environment. By the end of the programme, you’ll not only deepen your technical capabilities but also gain firsthand insight into how data-driven innovation shapes smarter, more resilient energy systems, giving you a powerful head start in your career.

This programme may also open the door to limited opportunities within our Graduate Programme, though placement is not guaranteed.

What are we after?

If you're studying Software Engineering, Data Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with a focus on coding and programming, and you're currently in your penultimate or final year, then our summer internship programme could be the perfect opportunity for you!

We’ve got a strong culture - we like to work hard and have fun whilst we’re doing it. We live by three ‘How to Be’s’: Be gutsy, be a good human, and be in the waka.

Why Meridian?

Meridian is truly flexible, diverse, and inclusive: in our workplace, you can feel comfortable bringing your whole self to work. Our internship is a great pathway to our grad roles, giving us a strong indication of your work ethics, and giving you an understanding of why Meridian is a great place to work.

What next?

If this sounds like you and something you’re keen to be a part of, and you want to bring your good energy and use your power to make a difference (pun intended), then apply today by uploading a copy of your CV and a Transcript with your application, telling us why you want to be considered. Feel free to also add a cover letter to your application, to give us even more reasons to bring you on board!

  • Please note - you’ll need to be available for interviews via teams the week of 25th August 2025 (NB timeframes may be adjusted and we will advise you in advance of any changes).

Our internship runs from November 2025 – February 2026 with a small break over Christmas/New Year.

If you’ve any questions, please email [email protected] and someone will get back to you.

Applications close 10th August 2025.
