About the team
The Public Policy team helps represent Stripe to the public and governments. We help the company understand and adapt to a changing environment, anticipate and respond to challenges, and advocate for the needs of our users and the online economy. We believe that government policies play a key role in economic progress and innovation around the world and that business should play a transparent, constructive and ethical role in solving complex problems. What you’ll doResponsibilities
- Support State and Local Public Policy, which involves bringing together cross-functional groups within the company to spot issues and understand the impact to Stripe, building a strategy to address Stripe’s key issues at the state level, and working with trade associations and coalitions to advance policy issues important to Stripe and our users
- Foster state and local political relationships
- Hire and manage consultants
- Coordinate Stripe political giving at the state and local level
- Build a strategic network of Stripe users to engage in coordinated advocacy at the state and local level
Who you are
We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.
Minimum requirements
- 5-8 years experience working in public policy, including with state legislative & regulatory issues in a public sector or private sector position
- Availability for regular travel (40%-50%)
- Strong political connections in a key Stripe market (e.g., CA, WA, NY)
- A combination of political savvy and the ability to go deep into complex policy issues, especially in financial services and payments regulation
- Demonstrated experience advocating across many states in front of legislators, regulators, attorneys general, and governors, including their respective political and policy associations
- Demonstrated experience in coalition building, trade association coordination, and managing state consultants
- A “start up mentality”: a willingness to roll up your sleeves, iterate, challenge the status quo, take chances and learn
- Humility and commitment to teamwork
- Strong communication (both written and verbal) skills
- Strong strategic thinking, creativity, and able to juggle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment
Preferred qualifications
- Industry knowledge or passion for payments, tech, and financial services.
- The ideal candidate is an outstanding communicator, a creative problem-solver and works exceptionally well with Legal, Regulatory, Comms and other functions, and across various geographies.
