Role Summary
The Staff Technical Program Manager (TPM) is a senior individual contributor responsible for driving execution of complex, cross‑functional, and technically deep initiatives that span multiple teams, systems, and organizations. This role operates at a strategic level, translating business objectives into executable technical programs while ensuring predictable delivery, risk management, and stakeholder alignment.
The Staff TPM is expected to influence without authority, lead through ambiguity, and serve as a force multiplier across engineering, product, and operations.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Execution
- Own end‑to‑end delivery of large, complex technical programs spanning multiple teams and systems
- Break down ambiguous business goals into structured program plans, milestones, and execution roadmaps
- Drive execution rigor across planning, dependency management, risk mitigation, and delivery tracking
- Proactively identify, manage, and resolve cross‑team dependencies and critical path risks
Technical Depth & Decision Support
- Partner closely with engineering leaders to understand architecture, trade‑offs, and technical constraints
- Facilitate technical decision‑making by surfacing data, options, and impact analysis
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights for non‑technical stakeholders
- Ensure programs adhere to engineering excellence standards (scalability, reliability, security, quality)
Stakeholder Management & Communication
- Act as the single point of accountability for program health and outcomes
- Align senior stakeholders across Product, Engineering, Design, Operations, and Business
- Provide clear, concise, and data‑driven communication on status, risks, and trade‑offs
- Manage executive‑level escalations with context, options, and recommendations
Operating Model & Process Excellence
- Define and evolve program management best practices, frameworks, and tooling
- Drive continuous improvement in execution, predictability, and delivery maturity
- Mentor and coach TPMs and program managers across the organization
- Influence portfolio‑level planning, prioritization, and sequencing
Organizational Impact
- Lead programs with org‑wide or multi‑portfolio impact
- Shape long‑term execution strategy and delivery operating models
- Raise the bar for technical program management standards and capability
Required Qualifications
Experience
- 10+ years of experience in Technical Program Management, Engineering Program Management, or related roles
- Proven track record delivering large‑scale, cross‑org technical initiatives
- Experience working directly with engineering teams on complex systems
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycles and system architectures
- Experience with distributed systems, platforms, or large‑scale applications (preferred)
- Ability to reason about technical trade‑offs, risks, and dependencies
- Familiarity with Agile, Scrum, Kanban, and hybrid delivery models
Program Management Skills
- Expert in program planning, execution, and risk management
- Strong data‑driven decision‑making and problem‑solving skills
- Ability to manage ambiguity and rapidly changing priorities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior engineering or technical background (software, systems, or infrastructure)
- Experience in scaled or matrixed organizations
- Experience leading transformation or foundational platform programs
- Exposure to cloud platforms, DevOps, or enterprise systems

- Thinks beyond individual programs to systemic improvements
- Acts as a trusted advisor to senior leaders
Certifications
- PMP, PgMP, SAFe Program Consultant (SPC), or equivalent advanced program management certification
- Agile certifications (CSM, SAFe Agilist, PMI‑ACP) at scale
- cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP) and AI certifications are a plus
Nice‑to‑Have Skills
- Experience delivering Generative AI solutions from concept through production
- Familiarity with LLM integration patterns, prompt workflows, evaluation methods, and safety/guardrails
- Understanding of GenAI delivery risks and cross‑functional coordination across product, engineering, data science, security, and legal teams
- Experience with AI/ML platform programs and MLOps/LLMOps practices
- Knowledge of Responsible AI principles and governance
- Ability to scale AI delivery through standardized tooling, operating models, and governance
