Our Mission

Healthcare should work for patients, but it doesn’t. In their time of need, they call down outdated insurance directories. Then wait on hold. Then wait weeks for the privilege of a visit. Then wait in a room solely designed for waiting. Then wait for a surprise bill. In any other consumer industry, the companies delivering such a poor customer experience would not survive. But in healthcare, patients lack market power. Which means they are expected to accept the unacceptable.

Zocdoc’s mission is to give power to the patient. To do that, we’ve built the leading healthcare marketplace that makes it easy to find and book in-person or virtual care in all 50 states, across +200 specialties and +12k insurance plans. By giving patients the ability to see and choose, we give them power. In doing so, we can make healthcare work like every other consumer sector, where businesses compete for customers, not the other way around. In time, this will drive quality up and prices down.

We’re 18 years old and the leader in our space, but we are still just getting started. If you like solving important, complex problems alongside deeply thoughtful, driven, and collaborative teammates, read on.

Your Impact on our Mission

Zocdoc’s greatest asset is its people — and as a Staff Software Engineer on the User Permissions team, you will play a critical role in shaping how healthcare organisations manage access, structure, and control across our platform.

Our mission is to build a system that reflects how customers actually operate — giving them clarity, control, and flexibility in managing providers, users, and performance. Today, large healthcare organisations face fragmented experiences that make it difficult to manage multiple accounts, permissions, and visibility across their business. The User Permissions team is transforming this by creating a unified, scalable foundation that models real-world organisational structures, enabling customers to securely manage their teams and workflows within a single, cohesive system.

You will architect and evolve the frameworks that define how roles, permissions, and provider groupings interact across Zocdoc, ensuring our platform mirrors the complexity of modern healthcare while remaining simple, intuitive, and secure. Your work will be foundational to creating a Zocdoc that truly feels built for our customers’ reality — empowering them to operate efficiently, gain insight, and grow with confidence.

You’ll enjoy this role if you are…
  • Inspired by the opportunity to positively impact the healthcare experience for millions of customers and providers

  • Passionate about building highly scalable platforms with the latest technologies, and excited about developing new and innovative products

  • Product-driven with a relentless focus on user needs, and excited to partner closely with cross-functional teams, leading projects beginning from the early ideation phase

  • A fervent champion of engineering fundamentals and enjoys driving the adoption of best practices in code health, testing, and maintainability across organisations and teams

  • A leader who mentors and grows teams, cultivates innovation and drives cross-collaboration across multiple teams

  • A believer that diverse and inclusive teams and cultures are non-negotiable

  • An entrepreneur with strong ownership who can thrive in an ambiguous and fast-changing environment

Your day-to-day is…

  • Own the technical vision and architecture for Zocdoc’s User Permissions platform, ensuring secure, scalable, and flexible access control across products and teams.

  • Design and evolve core abstractions that model how real healthcare organisations operate — including roles, permissions, and hierarchical groupings of users and providers.

  • Lead the development of foundational frameworks that connect users, permissions, and organisational structures across Zocdoc’s ecosystem, ensuring consistent and intuitive experiences.

  • Partner closely with Product, Design, and Data teams to translate complex customer needs into elegant, maintainable, and high-impact technical solutions.

  • Architect integrations and APIs that enforce permission models and data visibility rules across multiple domains within the Zocdoc platform.

  • Drive technical excellence through thoughtful system design, documentation, and mentorship — setting standards for reliability, performance, and extensibility.

  • Prototype and lead 0→1 initiatives that expand Zocdoc’s platform capabilities in user and role management, permissions intelligence, and enterprise-grade access control.

  • Continuously improve developer experience by building reusable services, tooling, and interfaces that make permissions easy to integrate and reason about for other engineering teams.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure organisational hierarchies, access rules, and data visibility are reflected accurately across all customer and internal workflows.

  • Champion a customer-first and security-first mindset, ensuring that every technical decision increases clarity, autonomy, and trust for our users.

You’ll be successful in this role if you have…
  • Successfully shipped code for a complex, user-facing product, with experience working across multiple areas of the technology stack

  • Demonstrated history of solid and well-rounded system design skills

  • Improved developer productivity, efficiency and velocity by setting up the best practices for coding, testing, deployment and observability

  • Successfully mentored other engineers in the past and have encouraged your peers to use engineering best practices

  • Been an effective communicator capable of delving into technical project details and facilitating discussions on technical aspects, while also adept at presenting technical solutions at an appropriate level of abstraction for a diverse cross-functional audience, including non-technical stakeholders.

  • A growth mindset and inspires excellence

  • Experience successfully working with a distributed workforce is preferred

  • 12+ years of significant expertise in full-stack development. Strong understanding of OO Fundamentals. Experience within AWS environments and a high emphasis on testing are a plus
