The Role

About the Company

Gemini is a global crypto and Web3 platform founded by Tyler Winklevoss and Cameron Winklevoss in 2014. Gemini offers a wide range of crypto products and services for individuals and institutions in over 70 countries.

Crypto is about giving you greater choice, independence, and opportunity. We are here to help you on your journey. We build crypto products that are simple, elegant, and secure. Whether you are an individual or an institution, we help you buy, sell, and store your bitcoin and cryptocurrency.

At Gemini, our mission is to unlock the next era of financial, creative, and personal freedom.

In the United States, we have a flexible hybrid work policy for employees who live within 30 miles of our office headquartered in New York City and our office in Seattle. Employees within the New York and Seattle metropolitan areas are expected to work from the designated office twice a week, unless there is a job-specific requirement to be in the office every workday. Employees outside of these areas are considered part of our remote-first workforce. We believe our hybrid approach for those near our NYC and Seattle offices increases productivity through more in-person collaboration where possible.

The Role: Staff Software Engineer (Backend)

As a Staff Software Engineer at Gemini, you’ll be at the forefront of solving complex, high-impact challenges that shape the future of digital assets. You’ll work with a passionate, self-driven team that collaborates closely with our Trading Systems engineering team to build innovative, scalable trading products. This is a chance to directly influence the direction of an emerging industry by developing secure, highly available systems that serve millions of users. If you're excited about tackling technical challenges that make a real difference to customers, clients, and our team, we want to hear from you.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead complex technical projects: Guide the technical direction of initiatives across multiple teams and domains, ensuring scalable, high-quality solutions that align with business objectives.
  • Mentor and develop engineers: Act as a technical mentor for less experienced engineers, fostering professional growth and encouraging continuous learning across the team.
  • Influence engineering culture: Promote best practices for code quality, security, and system design. Drive improvements in processes and tools that increase the team’s overall effectiveness.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with product managers, designers, and other engineering leaders to ensure alignment on technical and product goals.
  • Drive architecture decisions: Shape the long-term technical strategy by making high-impact architectural decisions that guide our platform's scalability and reliability.
  • Advocate for operational excellence: Champion continuous improvements in performance, monitoring, and security, and ensure systems operate with a high degree of availability.
  • Foster alignment across teams: Serve as a key point of contact to facilitate communication and collaboration across engineering, product, and business teams.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with a proven track record of designing and delivering high-quality, scalable systems.
  • Expertise in backend development, with advanced proficiency in at least one programming language (we primarily use Scala on the backend, but we're open to candidates willing to learn).
  • Strong understanding of cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, and experience with deploying and scaling applications in cloud environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex, multi-team technical projects from concept to completion, with a focus on long-term impact and scalability.
  • Experience in mentoring and coaching other engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Ability to balance technical trade-offs between speed and quality while maintaining a strong focus on delivering business value.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, product, and design teams, and to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Work experience or knowledge of the finance industry, payments, trading and/or exchange systems.
  • Demonstrated expertise in full-stack product development.
