Role summary
We are seeking experienced software engineers with a holistic approach to software architecture. As a Staff Engineer, you will be involved in key components of our technology, including core product development, model deployment, real time streaming services, DX tools implementation, cloud infrastructure management, index/search capabilities, etc. Your role is pivotal in designing, developing, and maintaining top-tier software that not only meets but exceeds user expectations. Additionally, you will act as an advocate of engineering best practices within the team, including but not limited to performance optimization, security and code quality.
What you will do
Depending on your skills and fields of expertise, you will be involved in different components of our technology, including core product development (La Plateforme, Le Chat), model deployment, real time streaming services, DX tools implementation, cloud infrastructure management, data acquisition, index/search capabilities, etc. Your responsibilities will include:
• Craft and Innovation: Be a key contributor to the design and implementation of new features, working closely with other engineers to bring cutting-edge ideas to life.
• Cross-Functional Synergy: Collaborate with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to define and implement solutions that push the boundaries of what's possible.
• Performance Excellence: Ensure our products are high-performing, reliable, and responsive, delivering a seamless user experience.
• Code Quality Champion: Uphold the highest standards of code quality through rigorous reviews, unit testing, and automation.
• Thought Leader: Stay at the forefront of software development trends and technologies, continuously enhancing your skills and knowledge.
• Mentor and Guide: Foster the growth of other engineers, sharing your expertise and contributing to a culture of learning and development.
• End-to-End Ownership: Participate in the full software development lifecycle, from conceptualization to deployment, ensuring our products exceed user expectations.
Currently (may change as we grow), a Staff Engineer at Mistral AI spends a good chunk of their time coding and another part operating on strategic topics like:
• Owning engineering projects end to end (from architecture design to delivery)
• Advocating cross-domain topics (architecture, code quality, testing, performance, documentation...)
• Coaching and mentoring other engineers
• Interacting with Product Managers
About you
• Proven work experience in a similar Staff role.
• Proficient in part of our stack (Python, FastAPI, Typescript, NodeJS, React, NextJS, Docker, K8s).
• Experience with large-scale and complex distributed systems.
• Architectural skills (scoping, scalability, reliability & maintainability).
• Cross-domain spike (performance, security, testing…).
• Proven capacity to mentor, coach and train other engineers.
• Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
• Ownership and capacity to ship products end-to-end.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Low ego and team spirit mindset.
• Autonomous and self-starter.
Location
For this position, we do not require you to be based in any specific location outside the countries listed in this job offer. In return, we ask you to be available for a monthly visit to one of our offices:
• 🇫🇷 🇩🇪 🇪🇸 If based in France, Germany or Spain, we will ask you to come to our Paris office 3 days per month
• 🇬🇧 If based in the UK, we will ask you to come to our London office 3 days per month
• We will cover 100% of inter-country travelling and 50% of intra-country travelling fees
• We ask all new hires to come to our Paris HQ for the first month of their onboarding (accommodation and travel covered)
