The Hartford’s Corporate IT organization is seeking a highly motivated, detail‑oriented Software Engineer to join Enterprise Risk Management IT (ERMIT) as part of the GIS team. This role’s primary responsibilities are the ownership, administration, stability, security, and ongoing operation of the enterprise ArcGIS platform, supporting critical underwriting, claims, and risk management capabilities across the firm. The position emphasizes end‑to‑end accountability for ArcGIS Enterprise system administration, cloud‑hosted infrastructure, enterprise geodatabases, and automated data and ETL workflows. The successful candidate will own and operate platform components hosted in AWS, spanning both Windows and Linux environments, and will be responsible for driving platform stability, security, scalability, and operational excellence. This role requires strong engineering fundamentals, an AI mindset, deep hands‑on experience with Esri technologies, and the ability to independently manage, evolve, and harden GIS platforms and data pipelines with minimal oversight. Candidates will work closely with peer engineering teams, database and infrastructure partners, and business stakeholders, providing technical leadership while adhering to established standards, operational processes, and security practices.
Responsibilities:
Own and operate the ArcGIS Enterprise platform (Portal, Server, Data Store) for The Hartford
Support the underlying ArcGIS platform Windows infrastructure, including installations, configurations (ArcGIS Portal, Server, Data Store, IIS, Web Adaptor, Tomcat & Java), server migrations, patch management, and upgrades. Monitor system performance, health, and availability.
Maintain enterprise geodatabases (Oracle, PostgreSQL), managing schema objects and content updates, SDE connectivity, and ST Geometry configuration as well as Enterprise Geodatabase upgrades
Secure ArcGIS Enterprise content by applying industry best practices for data confidentiality, authentication, and integration with Active Directory/IWA/SAML
Manage and maintain ArcGIS Enterprise backup and restore procedures ensuring system resiliency
Create and maintain spatial services using ArcGIS Pro projects and Python, including map, feature and geoprocessing service publications
Actively leverage AI technologies to improve delivery cycles and workflows
Develop Python and PowerShell scripts with ArcPy, ArcGIS Pro Models to automate business and administrative tasks, analytics and data workflows (e.g., ArcGIS API for Python)
Operate and troubleshoot automated spatial ETL workflow pipelines
Provide Tier-3 escalation support for troubleshooting ArcGIS services, spatial applications, and GIS desktop
Create and maintain documentation including technical solutions, designs, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and best practices, and configuration guides for the platforms and workflows to support maintainability and platform stability
Qualifications:
3+ years of experience in software engineering and ESRI/ArcGIS Administration
In-depth knowledge of ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Pro, and their various components and licensing models
Strong knowledge of Windows/Linux Server administration, IIS, networking, and security concepts
Deep experience with relational databases hosting ArcGIS SDE Enterprise Geodatabase, specifically Oracle and PostgreSQL hosting as well as database procedural development, including the use of ArcGIS ST Geometry functions for data management and spatial analysis
Proficiency in Python, Arcade, and PowerShell for workflows, geoprocessing, and administration automation as well as exposure to development with AI tools such as Copilot and/or Amazon Q
Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple changing priorities in a fast-paced environment
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within an Agile development team
Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, or a related field, or comparable experience
Preferred Skills & Experience:
Experience with SQL Server and/or Snowflake databases
Background in OOP with experience in Java and Spring Boot and RESTful APIs backend services
Familiarity with CI/CD and DevOps tools (GitHub, Jenkins, SonarQube, etc.)
Experience with AWS cloud environments and migration of ArcGIS Enterprise platforms
Experience with FME (Feature Manipulation Engine) Administration
Esri Technical Certification or GISP (Certified GIS Professional)
Ability to stay current on new Esri releases, technologies and products, and understand their impacts to the application portfolio and business environment
