The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Staff R&D Engineer to join our Joint Repair team, focusing on early innovation and the development of cutting-edge orthopedic solutions. This role involves taking projects from concept through to prototype and testing, leveraging your expertise in design and engineering principles to create effective and innovative products. This role will exercise the intersection of engineering, strategic thinking and direct collaboration with Health Care Providers.

What you will be doing:

  • Project Development: Lead early-stage innovation projects, translating market needs into viable product concepts. Collaborate with Health Care Physicians.

  • Prototyping: Design and develop prototypes for new orthopedic devices, utilizing CAD software and rapid prototyping techniques to bring ideas to life.

  • Testing and Validation: Plan and execute tests to evaluate prototype performance, safety, and efficacy. Analyze data and make recommendations for design improvements based on findings.

  • Design Optimization: Apply engineering principles and best practices to refine designs for manufacturability and cost-effectiveness while ensuring compliance with industry standards.

  • Technical Documentation: Prepare and maintain detailed documentation, including design specifications, testing protocols, and reports to support regulatory submissions and internal reviews.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with clinical teams, regulatory affairs, and manufacturing to ensure that products meet user needs and regulatory requirements throughout the development process.

  • Innovation: Stay abreast of emerging trends and technologies in orthopedics and identify opportunities for innovation within the product portfolio.

  • Onsite: In the office 2-3x a week depending on projects.

What you will need to be successful:

  • BS degree in Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in R&D engineering or MS with 3 years’ experience.

  • Focus on medical devices or orthopedics preferred.

  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and familiarity with simulation tools.

  • Strong understanding of materials science, biomechanics, and manufacturing processes.

  • Experience in designing and conducting experiments, as well as analyzing and interpreting data.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
