Job Summary & Responsibilities

Onto Innovation is seeking a Project Manager, Manufacturing Transfer & Extended Factory Operations to lead the transition of product lines and manufacturing processes from our Milpitas, CA operations to our extended factory (EF) partners in Asia. This role owns the end-to-end transfer program — from readiness assessment and knowledge capture through process qualification, training, and steady-state handoff — ensuring transitions are executed on schedule, within budget, and without disruption to product quality or customer commitments.

The ideal candidate brings strong program and project management discipline, hands-on experience with manufacturing process transfer or automation, comfort operating across cultures and time zones, and the communication skills to translate complex technical and operational detail into clear plans, training materials, and executive updates.

Manufacturing Transfer Program Leadership

  • Lead product and process transfer projects from US manufacturing sites to extended factory sites in Asia, managing scope, schedule, budget, and risk from kickoff through steady-state production.

  • Develop detailed transfer plans covering documentation transfer, tooling and equipment relocation, process qualification, pilot builds, and ramp-to-volume milestones.

  • Coordinate cross-functional stakeholders — engineering, quality, supply chain, procurement, and EF site teams — to keep transfer programs aligned and on track.

  • Track and report program status, cost, and risk to operations leadership, escalating issues and driving resolution before they impact schedule or quality.

Knowledge Transfer, Training & Enablement

  • Build structured knowledge-transfer packages, work instructions, and internal playbooks that preserve process expertise and accelerate EF team onboarding.

  • Deliver cross-functional, in-person and remote training to extended factory teams in Asia on manufacturing processes, process automation, and quality standards.

  • Establish feedback loops with EF sites to continuously refine training materials and transfer processes based on real-world execution.

Operational Execution & Cost Control

  • Manage operational execution and cost controls across multi-site transfer programs, ensuring transitions meet cost, quality, and timeline targets.

  • Partner with supply chain and procurement to align material flow, sourcing, and inventory strategy with the transferring production lines.

  • Identify and drive process improvements that reduce transfer risk, cycle time, and total cost of the transition.

Data, Reporting & Decision Support

  • Build dashboards and reporting tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Salesforce) to track transfer program milestones, cost, and quality metrics for business-unit and executive review.

  • Support research and evaluation of AI/ML and automation opportunities to improve manufacturing transfer efficiency and EF process consistency.

  • Synthesize complex operational data into clear, decision-ready updates for senior stakeholders.

Stakeholder Coordination & Communication

  • Serve as the primary point of coordination between Milpitas engineering/operations teams and extended factory partners in Asia, managing expectations and communication cadence across time zones.

  • Prepare and deliver clear written and verbal updates, transfer readiness reviews, and post-transfer retrospectives to leadership.

  • Build strong working relationships with EF partner teams to support long-term collaboration beyond the initial transfer.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; degree in business, engineering, operations, or a related field preferred.

  • 5+ years of experience in project management, business operations, or manufacturing operations, ideally within a technology, semiconductor, or advanced manufacturing environment.

  • Demonstrated experience managing multimillion-dollar operational programs, including cost control and cross-functional execution.

  • Experience delivering training or knowledge transfer to cross-functional or international teams, including sites in Asia.

  • Proficiency with Power BI, Tableau, Salesforce, or similar tools for reporting and decision support.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesize ambiguous or complex information into structured plans.

  • Comfort operating across cultures, time zones, and organizational boundaries.

  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in the semiconductor or semiconductor capital equipment industry is a plus.

  • Familiarity with manufacturing process automation and AI/ML-enabled manufacturing tools.

  • Experience building internal playbooks, SharePoint knowledge bases, or structured documentation systems.

  • Track record of turning ambiguous, fast-moving situations into structured, well-communicated action plans.

  • Prior experience working directly with contract manufacturers or extended factory partners in Asia.

What Success Looks Like in the First 12 Months

At least one major product or process line has been successfully transferred from Milpitas to an extended factory site in Asia, on schedule and within budget.
