Staff Engineer – SRE
Position Summary
GEICO is seeking an experienced Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime modern platforms, and applications. You will help drive our Tech transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating the culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
Position Description
Our Staff Engineer is a lead member of the engineering staff working with our Manager and Engineers to innovate and build new systems, improve, and enhance existing systems and identify new opportunities to apply your knowledge to solve critical problems. You will lead the execution of a technical roadmap that will increase the velocity, safety, and security of delivering products and unlock new engineering capabilities. The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of technology, risk management, site reliability engineering principles and planning to design and implement resilient systems that safeguard our business from potential threats.
Position Responsibilities
As a Staff Engineer, you will:

Focus on multiple areas and provide technical leadership to the organization, helping our partner teams to improve the reliability, scalability & observability of their systems.

Lead the design and execution of strategies to improve the reliability and resilience of business impacting products across the organization.

Collaborate with team members, partners, and other engineering teams to solve complex problems.

Be accountable for the quality and impact of the solutions.

Utilize programming languages like Python, C#, Java or other object-oriented languages, SQL, and NoSQL databases, Container Orchestration services including Docker and Kubernetes, and a variety of cloud tools and services (Azure or AWS preferred) to achieve your goals.

Strengthen the technical expertise and know-how of your engineering team and product community through mentorship and coaching.

Consistently share best practices and improve processes within and across teams.

Analyze and forecast resource costs, incorporating them into business plans.

Determine and support resource requirements, evaluate operational processes, measure outcomes to ensure desired results, demonstrate adaptability and sponsor continuous learning.
Qualifications

Experience with infrastructure automation, tooling, and configuration management frameworks.
-
Detail-oriented with a drive for operational excellence
-
Deep knowledge of SRE practices, methodologies, and principles
-
Fluency in software development and best practices using programming languages such as Golang or Python.

Experience building the architecture and design of robust systems (architecture, design patterns, reliability, and scaling) as well as being able to apply those approaches to existing systems.

Experience building products with micro-services architecture and extensible REST APIs.

Experience with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code.

Fluency in DevOps Concepts, Cloud Architecture and Cloud DevOps Operational Framework (Azure or AWS preferred).

Experience with application monitoring tools, observability, and performance assessments.

Experience in Datacenter structure, capabilities, and offerings, including cloud native services (Azure or AWS preferred).

Experience in security protocols and products: understanding of Active Directory, Windows Authentication, SAML, OAuth.

Experience with solving analytical problems with quantitative approaches.

Ability to excel in a fast-paced, startup-like environment.

Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, operations, real-time communication).

Exemplary ability to design, perform experiments, and influence engineering direction and product roadmap.

Experience partnering with other engineering teams and translating research to production.

6+ years of professional reliability or software engineering experience

4+ years of experience in open-source frameworks

3+ years of experience with architecture and design

3+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or hybrid data center
Education

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience
Annual Salary
$115,000.00 - $230,000.00
The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
