The Reliability Engineer role at Toledo Refinery is a plant-wide engineering role responsible for improving the long-term reliability, availability, and lifecycle performance of refinery assets. This position is structured to focus on medium- to long-term reliability outcomes and is not intended to provide routine day-to-day operational or maintenance support. The role is designed for engineers with experience across mechanical, rotating, electrical, instrumentation, and/or process engineering disciplines and applies reliability principles holistically across rotating, fixed, electrical, and instrumented assets.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead, communicate and implement reliability improvement vision and associated initiatives to reduce unplanned downtime and maintenance costs.
- Develop reliability strategies based on asset criticality, risk, vulnerability studies, redundancy, spare parts management and other lifecycle considerations.
- Analyze asset and process chronic under-performance based upon recurring failures, bad actors, and other reliability risks.
- Perform and facilitate Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) and mentor in failure prevention activities and principles across the plant
- Use maintenance, operations, and condition monitoring data to support predictive and preventative maintenance strategies.
- Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Inspection, and Projects to embed reliability improvements into work processes.
- Provide reliability input to equipment selection, design reviews, TAR/outage scope and capital projects.
- Monitor and report reliability performance metrics such as availability, MTBF, and failure trends.
- Supports equipment strategy implementation, maintenance, and continuous optimization
- Coaches and mentors other department Engineers in reliability concepts/functions
- Uses measured risk approach and risk-value analysis methods in all business decisions
- Sets high standards for safety, integrity, and operational excellence
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Engineering Degree required
- 10+ years of experience in engineering support role in process industry required
- Advanced Reliability Program training preferred in disciplines of Lubrication, Vibration Analysis, RCM, FMEA, RAM Analysis, Equipment Strategy development, Reliability Analytics, etc.
- Reliability Engineering training or CMRP certification preferred
- Experience in Refining or Petrochemical Manufacturing preferred
- Working knowledge of predictive technologies, including vibration spectrum analysis, oil analysis, ultrasound and infrared technologies
- Self motivated: Aggressively and constructively pursues improvement – does not wait to be engaged
- Demonstrates and accepts personal accountability for quality of work
- Drives highly productive and mutually beneficial relationships with business partners, suppliers & peers
- Effectively uses written and verbal communications to drive desired results
