Staff Engineer, Billing

About the role:

At Forter, "Billing" isn't just about invoices, it’s the financial heartbeat of a platform protecting over $500B in annual commerce. As we scale toward our next phase of growth, we are looking for a Senior Engineer to architect the mission critical systems that translate massive data streams into financial reality.

We aren't looking for a "maintainer." We are looking for a builder who wants to own the core engine that powers Forter’s diverse and expanding product lines.

• Scale that Matters: You’ll handle high-volume data across 1 billion+ identities. This is a "zero-error-margin" environment where precision meets massive scale.
• AI-First Development: You won’t just use AI tools; you’ll build them. You will drive continuous efforts to automate complex processes and maintain a custom AI Agent designed to orchestrate billing data and handle automated requests, ensuring our systems remain as fast as they are precise.
• High Autonomy, High Impact: The Billing domain is the cornerstone of every new product launch. If you build it, the whole company feels the impact immediately.

What you'll be doing:

• Design, build, and maintain scalable and resilient systems that handle high-volume data, while collaborating with teammates and individual contributors at Forter
• Lead projects from concept to production, ensuring the highest standards of quality and financial integrity.
• Work on data-driven initiatives that improve system performance, efficiency, and billing accuracy
• Partner with Product and Business stakeholders to navigate technical trade-offs that directly affect Forter's bottom line.
• Use AI coding tools as a natural part of how you work, reviewing, guiding, and improving AI-generated code is part of the day-to-day here
• Help foster best practices and maintain a high standard of engineering excellence

What you'll need:

• 8+ years of production backend or data infrastructure experience, with at least 2 years at Staff Engineer or equivalent level
• Excellent teamwork and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to explain complex systems and facilitate collaborative solutions.
• Strong backend fundamentals; Python is our primary language, but we value engineering fundamentals over specific syntax
• Proven experience owning systems in production, including monitoring, troubleshooting, performance and reliability improvements
• Familiar with DevOps tools and practices, including CI/CD, deployment pipelines, observability, and quality assurance (unit, integration testing)
• Experience with AWS and storage at scale (MySQL, Snowflake, Redis)
• A proactive attitude and a passion for providing technical solutions that bring an immediate business impact and ensure engineering excellence

It would be cool if you have:

• Familiarity with NoSQL data stores such as Elasticsearch 
• Experience building and maintaining data pipelines using industry-standard frameworks like Airflow, Kafka, Delta Lake, etc
• Experience with Kubernetes or other container orchestration platforms
• Background in billing / ERP systems
