The Staff Attorney I (official NJM job title) performs coverage analysis, drafts and reviews relevant communications, which may include reservation of rights letters and coverage position letters associated with claims under personal and commercial insurance policies.
The Staff Attorney I also monitors outside insurance defense litigation, coverage litigation, and appellate work under the supervision of a more senior attorney. The Staff Attorney I provides General Claims staff with legal advice regarding coverage and various claims questions, assists in responding to regulatory and consumer inquiries, and advises on legal developments in case law, statutes and regulations. The Staff Attorney I also provides General Claims Legal perspective to NJM business units on various matters including fraud, policy language, marketing materials, and legislation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides in-house legal oversight, advice and strategy recommendations relating to insurance defense and coverage litigation in the trial and appellate courts.
- Timely, accurately, and thoroughly analyzes legal issues and advises the General Claims department regarding complex personal and commercial auto, homeowners and commercial property and liability claims and coverage issues.
- Drafts and reviews coverage position and reservation of rights letters and other correspondence.
- Identifies legal issues and trends, analyzes industry impact and develops a strategy to respond.
- Provides advice and legal insight from a claims perspective on policy language, corporate communications, fraud, marketing materials, legislation, and other issues with clear communication.
- Prepares written responses to regulatory and consumer inquiries.
Required Qualifications:
- B.A. or B.S. and J.D. from an accredited law school, NJ Bar Admission in good standing or Limited License for In-House Counsel pursuant to N.J.Ct.R. 1:27-2.
- 2-5 years' experience providing legal advice regarding insurance coverage and insurance defense matters.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Decisive and well organized, ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strong relationship-building skills and a commitment to customer service.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Admissions to practice in NY, PA, CT, MD or OH a plus.
- Experience litigating insurance defense and insurance coverage cases.
Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience and credentials.
