Skidmore Sales & Distributing is searching for a full-time, experienced Staff Accountant to join our Finance team. This position applies principles of accounting to analyze financial information and assist in the preparation of financial reports. Computes, classifies, records, and verifies numerical data for use in maintaining accounting records.


General Ledger Accounting

  • Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare entries to accounts, such as general ledger accounts, documenting business transactions.
  • Maintains the general and subsidiary ledgers including; accounts receivable control and operating expense analysis.
  • Performs statistical analyses to determine trends, estimates, and significant changes, and writes narrative reports explaining findings.
  • Reviews, balances, and interprets reports, and makes corrections.
  • Monitors compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and company procedures.
  • Reviews, investigates, and corrects errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents, and reports.
  • Conducts studies and submits recommendations for improving the organization’s accounting operation.
  • Responsible for the monthly closing of the general ledger.
  • Responsible for the monthly reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts.
  • Extracts general ledger information.
  • Prepares and distributes various periodic management & statistical reports.
  • Assists with financial statement maintenance.
  • Prepares and posts month end journal vouchers.
  • Prepares and post weekly payroll journal vouchers.
  • Communicates intercompany transactions to subsidiaries.
  • Issues monthly financial statements.
  • Keeps CFO advised daily on routine accounting matters.
  • Assists CFO in special projects.

Taxes & Year End Duties

  • Assists with state & local tax package preparation for auditors.
  • Calculates and files quarterly CAT tax.
  • Prepares 1099 forms.
  • Calculates and files various state sales tax returns.
  • Assists with information preparation for annual review.
  • Assists with information preparation for tax preparers.
  • Calculates year end blending inventory.
  • Assists with annual insurance audit.
  • Assists CFO w/ budget preparation.

Banking & Cash Management

  • Performs file uploads for Positive Pay.
  • Sets up ACH transfers for weekly payments to vendors.
  • Audits bank fees for accuracy.
  • Communicates with bank treasury manager when discrepancies arise.
  • Calculates intercompany allocation of bank fees.
  • Maintains cash book records and assists w/ forecast for cash requirements.
  • Monitors customer credit card processing.
  • Maintains petty cash.
  • Reconciles bank statements.
  • Monitors un-cleared checks.
  • Generates monthly reconciliation reports.
  • Maintains bank reconciliation records.
  • Handles vendor requests for proof of cleared checks.
  • Assists AP with coding data for input to financial data processing system according to company procedures

Clerical/General Administrative

  • Respond to routine emails, phone calls, etc
  • Make copies, print documents, mail delivery, etc
  • File paperwork

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • Knowledge and skills at a level normally acquired through the completion of an Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.
  • 4-5 years of professional experience in Accounting, with particular experience in general ledger accounting efforts.

Licenses/Credentials/Certifications

  • CPA Preferred, but not required

  • Ability to prioritize own wide-ranging work load and work independently
  • Calm, organized, patient, diplomatic, and confident demeanor in working with staff and customers
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing to a wide range of audiences – primarily staff and customers
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and customers

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Working Hours/Environment

  • Office hours are 40 per week – Monday – Friday, 8:00 – 5:00; may require additional hours periodically, including evening and weekends depending on business needs
  • Work typically performed in an indoor office setting

Tools and Equipment Used

  • Personal computer, copier, fax/scanner, phone, and other typical office equipment

Travel

  • Minimal – less than 5% of the time

Physical & Mental Demands

  • Frequently required to sit at a desk/workstation for long period of time
  • Ability to work at a computer terminal for extended periods of time
  • Digital dexterity and hand/eye coordination in operation of office equipment
  • Light lifting and carrying of supplies, files, etc.
  • Ability to speak to and hear employees/clients via phone or in person
  • Body motor skills sufficient to enable incumbent to move around the office environment

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related discipline
  • 4-5 years professional accounting experience with general ledger responsibilities
  • CPA
  • Experience with month-end close and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Knowledge of state and local tax filings, 1099 preparation, and sales tax
  • Experience with banking processes including Positive Pay, ACH, and bank reconciliations
  • Advanced attention to detail and accuracy
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to prioritize workload and work independently
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
