Job Description:
We are seeking a Senior Web Developer with a specialization in Accessibility and Inclusive Design to join our team. This individual will lead efforts in developing web applications that are universally accessible, ensuring an inclusive online experience for all users, including those with disabilities and historically underserved communities. Working alongside the OLS User Experience team, the candidate will leverage their technical skills and deep understanding of accessibility standards to create barrier-free web services for every taxpayer.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a lead consultant on inclusive design principles, ensuring compliance with Section 508 and adherence to WCAG 2.1 standards for web applications.
- Conduct detailed weekly evaluations of user interfaces, including design artifacts, mock-ups, prototypes, and design components, offering recommendations for enhancements in inclusivity and accessibility.
- Perform thorough reviews of live products in development stages using assistive technologies (e.g., JAWS, Dragon Naturally Speaking, ZoomText), outlining necessary improvements for accessibility.
- Provide strategic insights on accessibility across the IRS's online service offerings, ensuring an inclusive user experience.
- Compile and present quarterly reports assessing the accessibility of online services, recommending improvements based on insights from a broad spectrum of taxpayers, including those with disabilities and limited English proficiency.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Web Development, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related discipline. An advanced degree is highly regarded.
- Demonstrable experience in web development, with a specific focus on accessibility and inclusive design practices.
- Deep knowledge of web accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.1, Section 508) and proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other front-end development technologies.
- Skilled in conducting accessibility audits and implementing remediation strategies.
- Exceptional analytical abilities and attention to detail.
- Outstanding communication and teamwork skills, capable of effective collaboration with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Experience with assistive technologies (screen readers, speech recognition, magnification software) is essential.
Minimum Eligibility:
- Candidates must meet requirements to obtain and maintain a Minimum Background Investigation (MBI) clearance (active Moderate Risk MBI clearance is a plus).
- Candidates must be a US Citizen or a Legal Permanent Resident (Green Card status) for at least three (3) years, and Federal Tax compliant.
