Our team designs and develops custom finance applications that support key business units including Controllership, Accounting, Treasury, and Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A). - Delivers complete solutions spanning all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) (design, implementation, testing, delivery and operations), based on definitions from more senior roles.
- Advises immediate management on project-level issues
- Guides junior engineers
- Operates with little day-to-day supervision, making technical decisions based on knowledge of internal conventions and industry best practices
- Applies knowledge of technical best practices in making decisions

What do you need to know about the role
As a Senior Backend Software Engineer, you will design and build robust, high-performance backend processes and services that transform data from PayPal and its acquired entities into our Finance ERP systems. This role requires deep expertise in backend development with proven experience in full-stack integration and front-end collaboration. You'll work on mission-critical data pipelines that ensure accurate, timely financial reporting and operational excellence across the organization.

At PayPal, Backend Software Engineers are the architects of our global payment platform. You'll design, develop, and optimize core systems that power millions of transactions daily, directly impacting our customers' experiences and our company's success.
Your day-to-day
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Java and modern frameworks
- Build data transformation pipelines that integrate PayPal transaction data with Finance ERP systems
- Develop RESTful APIs and microservices that seamlessly integrate with front-end applications
- Collaborate with front-end developers to ensure smooth end-to-end application functionality
- Leverage AI-powered development tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, etc.) to accelerate development and enhance code quality
- Work with cross-functional teams including Finance, Data Engineering, and Application teams
- Ensure system reliability, performance optimization, and data integrity across platforms
- Participate in architectural decisions driving our evolution from batch processing to real-time, event-driven architectures
What do you need to bring
- 3+ years of experience in backend software development with strong Java expertise
- Proven experience with full-stack application development and front-end integration (React, Angular, or similar frameworks)
- Hands-on experience using AI developer tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar platforms
- Strong understanding of RESTful API design and microservices architecture
- Experience with data transformation, ETL/ELT processes, and integration with ERP systems
- Proficiency in relational databases (SQL) and experience with cloud platforms (GCP or AWS)
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with financial systems or FinTech applications
- Knowledge of event-driven architectures and real-time data processing
- Familiarity with BigQuery, HANA, or similar data platforms
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
