Position Summary:

The Network Engineer’s role is to design, build and optimize network hardware and software systems to provide efficient communications over company networks. This includes the support and configuration of enterprise-class network and security platforms to include routing and switching platforms, wireless network components, WAN and network security devices.  Responsibilities of this role will also include implementing and supporting optimized and efficient communications mechanisms that provide priority for critical business systems applications and utilize congestion avoidance techniques over redundant network paths. Network management and monitoring applications will be installed, configured and utilized to ensure efficient network operations, provide capacity planning and verify the status of network devices to ensure maximum network availability. The role will be tasked with providing support for company voice and data networks and the resolution of trouble tickets initiated by the help desk, end users and those escalated from team members.

Position Responsibilities:

Design, Build and Optimize Network Hardware and Software Systems (40%)

  • Configure and install routing and switching platforms
  • Configure and install wireless network infrastructure components
  • Configure and install firewall and SDWAN component infrastructure
  • Deploy equipment code upgrades for all supported devices
  • Implement and manage network-based web filtering and anti-virus systems
  • Configure alternative network circuits for path diversity
  • Configure and tune routing to achieve efficient network failover
  • Deploy and maintain Quality-of-Service mechanisms to provide application prioritization
  • Identify, contain, and remediate cyber security incidents
  • Researches and evaluates new technology, techniques, threats, and industry best practices to optimize efficiency and usability and minimize vulnerabilities.

Network Management and Capacity Planning (40%)

  • Implements new networks, integrates acquisitions
  • Implement and upgrade NMS applications
  • Update NMS application inventories for device adds and removals
  • Utilize NMS applications to provide reports that illustrate network availability and performance
  • Perform capacity planning, identify network constraints and recommend a course of action
  • Identify network availability issues and initiate actions to obtain resolution

Network Support (20%)

  • Provide team help desk coverage
  • Accept and resolve support tickets
  • Initiate support tickets with service providers to resolve issues and circuit failures
  • Initiate service requests with vendors providing hardware maintenance contracts
  • Mentor & train junior network engineering teammates

Specific Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required:

  • Network:  Cisco, Meraki
  • WAN/NMS:  SDWAN, MPLS, Solarwinds
  • Security: Fortinet, Rapid7
  • Frameworks: SOX IT general controls, NIST CSF, Zero trust
  • Assesses and evaluates risk.
  • Takes all requirements into account when making proposals.
  • Shares own knowledge and experience and encourages learning and growth.
  • Advises on available standards, methods, tools, applications and processes relevant to group and can make appropriate choices from alternatives.
  • Creatively applies critical thinking and design practices in identifying solutions that will deliver value for the benefit of the customer/stakeholder.

Position Qualifications:

Prefer a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Information Technology, or related field.  Advanced degree also preferred.

10+ years of IT engineering experience.
