Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain firmware and driver solutions for Microsoft custom silicon platforms, including MAIA (AI accelerator) and COBALT (general-purpose compute), deployed across the Azure fleet.
- Contribute across all phases of the product lifecycle, from architecture and design through silicon bring-up, validation, manufacturing, and productization.
- Design and develop key firmware components, including driver interfaces, system libraries for SoC bring-up, low-level hardware protocols, and platform features.
- Participate in firmware architecture and technical design reviews, ensuring scalable, reliable, and high-performance solutions for Microsoft custom silicon platforms.
- Drive hardware-software integration efforts to enable new silicon capabilities and accelerate feature deployment across Azure infrastructure.
- Collaborate closely with silicon, board electrical, and hardware engineering teams to design, enable, and deliver new platform capabilities for Azure infrastructure.
- Partner with operating system and software platform teams to integrate and deploy new technologies and features across the Azure fleet.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 1+ year(s) technical engineering experience
- OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience
- OR equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of professional experience designing and developing firmware solutions.
- 4+ years of experience in C, C++, and Rust, with a strong track record of delivering production-quality software.
- 2+ years of experience with two or more industry-standard interfaces and protocols, including PCIe, I2C, SPI, USB, and UART.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

- Experience with UEFI and ARM Trusted Firmware (ARM-TF) is a plus.
- Experience with ARM64 SoCs and Armv8 architecture, including boot flows, trusted firmware, and system initialization, is a plus.
- Experience using AI-assisted and agentic development tools to accelerate issue triage, debugging, root-cause analysis, and feature development.
- Experience diagnosing and resolving complex hardware-software integration issues.
- Experience collaborating effectively across silicon, hardware, operating system, and platform software teams.

Firmware Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $160,200 - $261,000 per year.
