Primary Purpose
We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead a high-performing team collaborating with Product, Design and Engineering teams in building the next generation of our customer facing omnichannel shopping experiences and the e-commerce order capture services. You will combine technical expertise, people management, and a passion for automation to revolutionize how we develop software and operate our business. In this role, you will partner closely with Product, Experience Design, SRE, SecOps, Data and Operations to define a technology roadmap, uplift engineering standards, and ship reliable customer experiences via Mobile, Web and BE services at speed. You will mentor senior engineers, evolve architecture, and establish the operational excellence that keeps our e-commerce systems trustworthy at scale.
Our flexible/ hybrid work schedule includes 3 in-person days at one of our core locations and 2 remote days. Our core office locations include Chicago, IL.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Mentor and Grow Talent: Lead, coach, and develop a team of software engineers (Mobile/Web/Backend), fostering a collaborative, high-trust, and inclusive culture.
  • Performance & Career Development: Conduct regular 1 on 1s, performance reviews, and define career growth paths
  • Hiring: Drive recruitment efforts to build a world-class team, identifying high-potential talent
  • Lead the development and evolution of GraphQL and REST API services, including schema design, versioning strategies, gateways/federation, resiliency patterns (circuit breakers, retries, idempotency).
  • Ensure high-quality mobile/web apps: modular architecture, testability, offline-aware UX, network resilience, feature flags, and progressive rollouts.
  • Champion robust testing: unit, contract, integration, E2E, load/performance, and chaos testing.
  • Utilize and implement Agentic AI tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, custom IDE agents) to accelerate coding, debugging, and testing, boosting developer velocity.
  • CI/CD & Automation: Oversee the implementation of robust CI/CD practices to ensure safe, scalable, and compliant deployment of AI models into production.
  • Collaborate with SRE and Operation teams on incident response/on-call rotations, and service readiness runbooks.
  • Build comprehensive observability (metrics, logs, traces) with proper severity level and keywords and domain dashboards (cart abandonment, checkout error rates, payment declines).
  • Drive capacity planning, autoscaling, caching strategies, and fallback/degradation patterns to maintain customer trust during peak traffic (promotions, holidays).
  • Act as the primary liaison between Engineering, Product, Experience Design, Data, and Operations to prioritize backlog and align on business goals and outcomes
  • Define and drive engineering process enhancements to deliver fast with aligned quality, priority, timeline and scalability
Qualifications
  • 8+ years in software engineering including 3+ years managing engineering teams building customer-facing products at scale
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science
  • Deep expertise in Agile/Scrum/Kanban methodologies and tools (Jira, GitHub)
  • Coach engineers for best development practices and conduct PR review
  • Lead design/architecture reviews
  • Coordinate with product and program management for roadmaps, OKRs, and cross-team dependencies
  • Experience with agentic AI systems and MCP-based tool integrations is a big plus
  • Deep expertise in Agile/Scrum/Kanban methodologies and tools (Jira, GitHub).
  • Experience in e-commerce or transactional systems (cart, checkout, payments, order management)
  • Experienced in delivery any combination of mobile, web, and backend systems in production.
  • Proven track record improving reliability, observability, and operational excellence
  • Strong background in CI/CD, automated testing, and quality engineering.
  • Security experience: PCI, tokenization, secrets management, and OWASP best practices.
  • Expertise with event-driven architectures (Kafka), idempotency, and exactly-once or at-least-once processing tradeoffs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Familiarity with GraphQL federation, API gateways, and schema governance.
  • Performance tuning for at least one of the services - mobile (networking, caching, offline), web (Core Web Vitals, SSR/ISR), and services (p95/p99 latency)
  • Experience with agentic AI systems and MCP-based tool integrations is a big plus

Salary Range: $151,200 - $226,800
Actual compensation offered to a candidate may vary based on their unique qualifications and experience, internal equity, and market conditions. Final compensation decisions will be made in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.
