The Sr Accountant, External Reporting & Technical Accounting, is a key member of the Cengage Finance organization that exhibits a business orientation that expands beyond accounting and financial reporting and includes management decision support, process design and implementation, and critical analysis.

This position is a subject matter authority and is responsible for supporting the preparation of the quarterly and annual reporting documents, as well as the research & documentation related to U.S. GAAP and SEC pronouncements.

Where You'll Work: This is a hybrid position with the expectation of working at our Boston MA office one day per week. The remainder of the time will be spent working remote from home.

What You’ll Do Here:

  • Assists in the company’s external reporting process, with primary focus on preparation and review of publicly issued quarterly and annual financial reporting, ensuring alignment with SEC rules and regulations for 10-Qs / 10-Ks

  • Support coordination with internal/external counsel and external auditors

  • Conducts technical accounting research and prepares memos to detail Company specific positions

  • Assists with drafting, communication, and implementation of worldwide Cengage Accounting & Financial Policies

  • As system administrator of Workiva, own, maintain and drive improvements and efficiencies

  • Collaborates with partners in Business Finance, Financial Planning and Analysis, Treasury, Tax, Legal and global operational accounting teams to ensure accuracy of external reporting and earnings releases

  • Maintains strong internal controls over applicable areas of responsibility

Skills You Will Need Here:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required, CPA preferred

  • 3+ years of increasing responsibilities and related experience, public accounting experience a plus

  • Experience with Workiva and XBLR, a plus

  • Self-motivated with ability to handle fluctuating workload and timelines

  • Careful attention to detail and the ability to organize

  • Comfortable operating within a dynamic, complex organizational structure and ability to be flexible and collaborate with team on different projects and needs

  • Ability to succeed in a multi-priority, fast-paced and changing environment and readiness to embrace and successfully drive/implement change

  • Strong communication and analytical skills

The full base pay range has been provided for this position. Individual base pay will vary based on work schedule, qualifications, experience, internal equity, and geographic location.  Sales roles often incorporate a significant incentive compensation program beyond this base pay range.
