About the role
We are seeking a highly skilled Specialist Java Developer to join our WEX Mobility Engineering team, focusing on building innovative SaaS and PaaS solutions to support the EV energy transition. As part of this global team, you will contribute to developing products that enable on-route charging, at-home charging, and reimbursement solutions for EV users in the US and EU, while also enhancing systems that manage credit issuance and spend controls for fleet managers.

In this role, you will play a critical part in the entire software development lifecycle, from designing scalable architectures to ensuring robust deployment pipelines, empowering the team to achieve exceptional results.
Your expertise in Java and backend systems, along with your ability to collaborate across geographically distributed teams, will help drive the success and evolution of WEX Mobility products, ensuring they remain leaders in enabling sustainable and efficient fleet operations globally.

Collaborate with stakeholders to understand customer challenges and design scalable backend solutions.

Design, implement, and maintain robust REST APIs using Java and related frameworks.

Optimize and maintain critical legacy systems while modernizing functionality and ensuring stability.

Become a subject matter expert in your functional area and best practices.

Analyze existing systems and processes to identify areas for improvement and scalability.

Support live applications by implementing monitoring, ensuring rapid incident resolution, and driving continuous improvement.

Proactively review code, foster a culture of quality, and mentor team members.

Strengthen and drive our engineering process with TDD and BDD, Microservice, and Vertical Slice Architectures.

Develop CI/CD pipelines and contribute to deployment automation.

Adapt to new technologies and frameworks while navigating the challenges of working in the highly regulated payments domain.
Experience you’ll bring

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent education or work experience.

Solid hands-on experience developing applications using Java, Springboot, REST APIs
-
Experience with event-driven microservices architecture using Docker, Kubernetes, Kafka
-
Experience in low level technical designing and writing user stories (JIRA, Confluence)

Strong database skills (SQL, Postgres, Liquibase)

Demonstrable CI/CD experience

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Pick up new technology and switch between tech stacks with a minimum of fuss

Are comfortable working on backend code, services, data stores, and infrastructure systems

Are a solid architect/designer

Have experience writing modern software deployed in the cloud

Are comfortable with encryption schemes, modern APIs, and frameworks

Have worked on agile teams to deliver software iteratively

Are a highly adaptable, versatile, and dependable member of a highly agile and dynamic software engineering team.

Are a leader and mentor of the scrum team and perform the role of scrum master when necessary.

Drive a test-driven development approach and be happy to work and take responsibility for any stage within the software development life-cycle as required.
