We’re looking for a motivated Data Engineer to join the NF Data Warehouse/Lakehouse team within Digital Back Office (DBO). This role involves the delivery of data solutions and managing data integration across various Nationwide Financial products. This is a great opportunity to work on impactful data solutions that support a wide range of Nationwide Financial products, including Annuities, Life, Retirement, and Corporate Solutions. In this role, you’ll help drive data integration efforts across platforms, working with a modern Snowflake based data Lakehouse. You’ll be responsible for acquiring, curating, and publishing data for both analytical and operational use cases, while also helping to shape the future of our data ecosystem.


The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:

  • Proficient in SQL.
  • Strong proficiency in Snowflake (or equivalent) is essential
  • Experience in ETL/ELT processes including Python
  • Experience working in Lean, Agile, DevOps, and Cloud hosting environments.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills.

This role will work a hybrid schedule coming into the Columbus, Ohio office 2 days per week on Mondays & Tuesdays. However, on occasion, applications from internal candidates working remotely who bring critical industry skills and relevant experience may be considered.


This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization.  Nationwide does not participate in the Stem OPT Extension program.

As a Software Engineer, you will focus primarily on providing high-quality, efficient technology solutions to business partners by crafting new software applications or modifying and/or supporting existing packaged or custom-built applications. In this capacity, you’ll analyze, code, configure, test, debug, document, and maintain applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze solutions, develop, test, debug, document, and deploy software according to standards and best practices in an agile environment.

  • Apply secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.

  • Use DevSecOps practices, tooling, and techniques.

  • Drive continuous improvement and learning through ongoing training, practice, and innovation.

  • Manage medium to large project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables proactively.

  • Provides technical guidance to others.

  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

  • Reporting Relationships: Reports to a Technology Manager/Director.

Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Completion of undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, or other related degrees. Technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates can be substituted for an undergraduate degree.
Experience: Four or more years of software engineering, analysis, or related technology experience.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Java, C++, Python, and JavaScript. Strong knowledge of the software development lifecycle. Proven ability to tackle complex business and development problems. Ability to thrive in a team environment. Insurance/financial services industry knowledge is a plus.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies, and experiences may take precedence.
Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and Human Resources Business Partner.

The expected starting salary range for Specialist, Software Engineer : $95,500.00 - $143,500.00
