About the Role

Avail is Realtor.com's rental platform, covering listings, applications, leases, rent payments, and property maintenance. As a Senior Software Test Engineer on the Avail team at Realtor.com (RDC), you are a key technical contributor driving Quality Engineering enablement across our full rental-lifecycle platform. Rather than focusing on manual QA, you will empower and coach developers to own automated coverage while building developer enablement tooling, CI/CD quality gates, and automated test frameworks across web, API, and mobile experiences. You own test strategy and automation for the end-to-end Avail ecosystem: attracting renters through listing syndication, converting leads through application screening, creating and executing lease agreements, processing rent payments and financial workflows, and supporting ongoing property management tasks. You work hands-on in code, embed quality into delivery processes, and help shift the organization from manual regression triage toward developer-owned quality enablement.

Top Reasons to Apply
  • Own test strategy and end-to-end automation for Avail's complete rental lifecycle, from listings and lead ingestion to lease execution, payment collection, and property maintenance, driving platform stability across web and mobile surfaces.

  • Work hands-on with modern, multi-surface stacks including TypeScript/NestJS, Python, GraphQL, Kafka, Temporal, Playwright, Vitest, and React Native/Maestro for mobile testing.

  • Address critical quality challenges in stateful workflows, financial/identity risk, third-party integration reliability, and platform modernization while building visibility tooling like the E2E Lead Tracing Control Panel.

What You'll Do
  • Strategy

  • Set the test strategy for Avail across the full rental lifecycle, from listings to property maintenance. Decide what needs unit, integration, contract, end-to-end, performance, and mobile tests, and explain why.

  • Review designs early for testability: clear API contracts, safe retries, and logs that show what failed.

  • Work with product and engineering to pick quality work that reduces production escalations as Avail expands to new markets.

  • Automation

  • Build and maintain automated tests for web, API, and mobile using TypeScript (Playwright, Vitest), Python (pytest), and React Native tools (Maestro, Appium, or Detox).

  • Lead hands-on tests for TypeScript/NestJS services, GraphQL APIs, and Kafka and Temporal workflows.

  • Own mobile automation coverage for the Avail apps, including payments, messaging, and maintenance intake.

  • Keep CI/CD quality gates healthy in CircleCI and GitHub Actions, including parallelization and triage of failing checks.

  • Production

  • Send test coverage and quality signals to New Relic and OpenSearch so escalation patterns show up early.

  • Join production triage and incident reviews for Avail. Turn findings into test changes that prevent repeat escalations.

  • Coaching

  • Pair with developers to write functional, integration, and contract tests in their service codebases.

  • Mentor QE engineers and software engineers on service-level test design, contract testing, and observability-driven validation.

What You'll Bring
  • 5+ years of experience in software and test engineering, with a focus on Quality Engineering enablement, developer tooling, and test automation rather than manual QA.

  • Strong TypeScript/JavaScript automation experience.

  • Hands-on experience with Playwright for browser and critical-path testing.

  • Proficiency in API and GraphQL testing, along with frontend integration testing using Apollo.

  • Experience with unit and component testing frameworks, ideally Vitest and Storybook.

  • Ability to read and test Ruby/Rails systems; hands-on RSpec experience is valuable.

  • Proven experience integrating CI/CD quality gates, managing GitHub and CircleCI workflows, and implementing comprehensive test reporting.

  • Demonstrated expertise in risk-based testing across payments, authentication, messaging, and third-party integrations.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Hands-on mobile automation testing experience with React Native, Expo, Maestro, Detox, or Appium across iOS and Android builds.

  • Strong Differentiators

  • Experience moving engineering teams from manual regression testing toward developer-owned automated coverage.

  • Track record of building reusable test fixtures, harnesses, data generators, and developer enablement tooling.

  • Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure and deployment tooling, including AWS, Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes/EKS, or Argo CD.

  • Expertise in accessibility, cross-browser validation, performance, and Core Web Vitals testing.
