As a Software Engineer, you will play a crucial role in delivering high quality releases to our customers by designing, developing, troubleshooting, maintaining, optimizing and scaling BlackLine’s cloud-based backend services and driving innovation into our product suite. In this role, you will research, test, benchmark and evaluate new technologies, propose scaling solutions, collaborate with other teams to define and build new features, optimize existing features while writing elegant code, and communicating with people at all levels. You'll Get To:
- Provide technical expertise in the design, development, and delivery of BlackLine’s products, while adhering to timelines, coding standards, requirements, and quality.
- Design, develop, test, troubleshoot, debug, optimize, scale, maintain and improve software applications, driving the delivery of high-quality value and features to BlackLine’s customers. Collaborate with your team on all aspects of development including participation in code reviews, developing functional and technical specifications and strategizing test plans.
- Implement, refine, and follow software development techniques to ensure that delivered features meet software integration, performance, security, and maintainability expectations.
- Research, test, benchmark, and evaluate new tools and technologies, and recommend ways to implement them in product development.
- Maintain high standards of software quality and technical excellence within the team by proactively supporting good practices and habits and writing clean, testable, maintainable, and secure code.
- Proactively identify issues, bottlenecks, gaps, or other areas of concern or opportunity and work to either directly affect change, or advocate for that change by working with peers and leadership to build consensus and take action.
- Perform critical maintenance, deployment, and release support activities, including occasional off-hours support
What You'll Bring:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
- 3–5 years of professional software engineering experience, with proven contributions to projects and the ability to work independently within team-driven environments.
- Solid proficiency in one or more backend languages: .NET (C#), Java, or Python, with working knowledge of object-oriented principles, design patterns, and clean code practices.
- Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and backend services within distributed or microservices-based architectures.
- Demonstrated ability to write clean, testable, and maintainable code, and to participate productively in code reviews.
- Foundational hands-on experience with GCP or equivalent cloud platform (AWS, Azure), including deployment, monitoring, and basic infrastructure management.
- Familiarity with Terraform or infrastructure-as-code concepts.
- Working knowledge of containerization with Docker and basic Kubernetes concepts.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git-based workflows, and modern development tools.
- Working experience with relational databases such as SQL Server or PostgreSQL, including query optimization and schema design fundamentals.
- Familiarity with Snowflake or cloud data warehouses and NoSQL databases is a plus.
- Basic understanding of event-driven architectures; exposure to Apache Kafka or similar messaging platforms is a plus.
- Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using tools like GitHub Actions or similar,
- Awareness of secure coding practices, performance optimization basics, and system resiliency patterns.
- Active use of AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude in daily workflows — including code scaffolding, test generation, and debugging — with the ability to critically evaluate and validate AI-generated output before shipping.
- Ability to work effectively within Agile methodologies, contributing to ceremonies and collaborating closely with product, QA, and operations teams.
- Strong communication skills with an adaptability mindset. Comfortable learning new frameworks, tools, and patterns as the cloud ecosystem evolves.
- Proactive attitude toward identifying problems and proposing solutions, with a demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement.

- Familiarity with Snowflake or cloud data warehouses and NoSQL databases.
- Exposure to LLM APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI) or Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) concepts as part of personal projects, coursework, or prior work experience.
- Familiarity with React for frontend collaboration or full-stack feature delivery.
- Google Cloud or AWS foundational certification (Associate level or higher).
- Experience contributing to open-source projects or active GitHub portfolio.
