Sonar is committed to enabling developers and organizations to build better code for better software.
The Role
As a software engineer at Sonar, you will join the IDE squad to enhance SonarLint, develop IDE extensions, engage with the Open-Source community, and contribute to continuous improvement while ensuring code quality and a great developer experience.
Summary Generated by Built In

Sonar solves the trillion-dollar challenge of bad code. Sonar equips organizations to achieve and sustain a Clean Code state by empowering developers to write consistent, intentional, adaptable, and responsible code. Clean Code produces software that is maintainable, reliable, and secure, allowing development teams to spend less time fixing issues and more time innovating. With Sonar, and by employing the company’s Clean as You Code methodology, organizations minimize risk, reduce technical debt, increase productivity, and derive more value from their software in a predictable and sustainable way.

Sonar’s open-source and commercial products – SonarLint, SonarCloud, and SonarQube – support over 30 programming languages, frameworks, and infrastructure technologies. Trusted by more than 500,000 organizations and used by more than 7 million developers globally to clean more than half a trillion lines of code, Sonar is integral to delivering better software.

The impact you can have

SonarLint is a plugin for popular IDEs, with the aim to help developers fix code quality and security issues before they exist by analyzing and highlighting issues on the fly as you code. In addition, SonarLint integrates with our server products SonarQube and SonarCloud to further enhance the development experience.

Our team is looking for a polyglot (predominantly Java) developer passionate about creating great products to join our IDE squad and contribute to the different flavors of SonarLint (e.g. Eclipse, VSCode, IntelliJ). Your mission is to help the team make SonarLint a tool all developers love to use in their IDEs.

On a daily basis, you will

  • Join the IDE squad, responsible for the development of the SonarLint IDE extensions (contribute to specification, write code and tests, review code from peers, validate features, release).
  • Be a key contributor to an Open-Source tool that developers know, use, and love.
  • Become an export, and push the limits of what can be done with the most popular IDE extensibility SDKs.
  • Leverage the power of SonarCloud and SonarQube in the IDE, while ensuring a great developer experience in the IDE.
  • Contribute to the CI pipeline supporting the development and releases of SonarLint.
  • Engage with the Open-Source community, other SonarSourcers, and the Support team and integrate their feedback.
  • Contribute to your squad’s continuous improvement, by participating in retrospectives, sharing your technical knowledge, and taking on a fair share of the squad’s workload.
  • Bring your very own touch to the Sonar culture by participating in circles, initiatives, and any of the various expressions of our collectively intelligent approach to work.
  • As part of the role, you will participate in an on-call rotation to provide timely support and address any critical system issues that may arise outside of regular working hours.

The skills you will demonstrate

  • 5 years of experience in software development with a strong focus on Java.
  • Ability to develop with clean code principles and practices.
  • Excellent engineering skills and a good understanding of Computer Science fundamentals.
  • Fluency in source code quality: tests (unit and functional), CI/CD, and code reviews.
  • Good understanding of agile practices and principles.
  • Comfortable in dealing with change and ambiguity.
  • Self-confidence to challenge the status quo as well as to be challenged.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

Nice to have

  • Experience developing IDE extensions.
  • Experience with frontend/UI development.
  • Experience using and configuring static analyzers as part of the development process.

What We Do

Software-driven digital innovation is essential for competing in today's market, and the foundation of this innovation is code. However, there are widespread cracks in this foundation – lines of bad, insecure, and poorly written code – that manifests into tech debt, security incidents, and availability issues. With Sonar, developers and organizations are empowered to create quality, secure code confidently, whether written by humans or generated with AI.

The Sonar solution, SonarQube, helps prevent code quality and security issues from reaching production, amplifies developers' productivity in concert with AI assistants, and improves the developer experience with streamlined workflows. Sonar analyzes all code, regardless of who writes it—your internal team or genAI—resulting in more secure, reliable, and maintainable software.

At Sonar, we are driven by a deep belief in our people, a commitment to excellence, and an unwavering dedication to delivery. We operate as a united group where our collective success is the sum of each individual's contributions. Our company culture is driven by the values of CODE: Committed, Obsessed, Deliberate & Effective. This mindset reflects our culture of creativity, collaboration, and pride in the work we do.

Rooted in the open-source community, Sonar’s solutions support over 30 programming languages, frameworks, and infrastructure technologies. Today, Sonar is used by 7M+ developers and 400K organizations worldwide, including the DoD, Microsoft, NASA, MasterCard, Siemens, and T-Mobile.

Sonar is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland with additional offices in Austin, Texas; Annecy, France; Bochum, Germany, London, England; and Singapore. The company is rapidly growing with over 600 employees!

Join us in our mission to solve the trillion-dollar challenge of bad code!
