As part of Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering group, the databases team is in charge of building the next generation of database cloud services for our global customers. Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.
As a Software Engineering Intern, you'll work alongside engineers, product managers, and business leaders helping build and operate cloud database technologies that power some of the world's largest applications. You'll gain hands-on experience with modern data platforms while contributing to real projects that impact customers around the globe.

Responsibilities
- Designs, develops, and tests software features for Azure database services, including Azure SQL, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, Cosmos DB, and emerging database technologies.
- Builds and improves components that enhance database performance, scalability, reliability, security, and developer productivity.
- Works with large scale distributed systems and cloud infrastructure to solve complex engineering challenges.
- Writes high quality, maintainable code and participate in code reviews, debugging, testing, and deployment activities.
- Analyzes system telemetry and performance data to identify opportunities for optimization and improve customer experiences.
- Collaborates with engineers, product managers, and researchers to deliver new capabilities that support modern data and AI applications.
- Develops automation, tooling, and observability solutions that help teams operate services efficiently and reliably.
- Learns and applies engineering best practices related to software design, security, performance, and live site operations.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Currently pursuing Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field with at least one semester/term remaining following the completion of the internship,
- OR currently pursuing Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field with at least one semester/term remaining following the completion of the internship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Coursework or projects in Algorithms, Databases, Distributed Systems, OS, and Networking.
- Experience programming in one or more languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, through coursework, projects, internships, research, or open-source contributions.
- Understanding of core computer science concepts including data structures, algorithms, operating systems, networking, or distributed systems.
- Exposure to database systems through coursework, research, or projects, including concepts such as SQL, data modeling, indexing, transactions, query processing, or distributed data.
- Experience building, debugging, or testing software through academic, personal, research, internship, or open-source projects.
- Exposure to AI/ML concepts through coursework, research, or projects, including areas such as generative AI, embeddings, vector search, retrieval, or AI agents.
- Interest in database systems, cloud computing, distributed systems, and building data systems or developer experiences for AI-powered applications.
- Problem-solving skills with curiosity and an ability to learn new technologies and technical concepts.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate technical ideas clearly.

The base pay range for this internship is USD $5,690.00 - $11,210.00 per month. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $7,410.00 - $12,250.00 per month.
