Cedar’s mission is to empower us all to easily and affordably pursue the care we need.
The Role

Our healthcare system is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the U.S. Every year, over 50 million Americans suffer adverse financial consequences as a result of seeking care, from lower credit scores to garnished wages. The challenge is only getting worse, as high deductible health plans are the fastest growing plan design in the U.S.

Cedar’s mission is to leverage data science, smart product design and personalization to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. Today, healthcare providers still engage with its consumers in a “one-size-fits-all” approach; and Cedar is excited to leverage consumer best practices to deliver a superior experience.

The Role

Cedar is seeking a Software Engineer III to join our Payments Platform squad in the Payment Pillar. The Payments Platform squad is responsible for building and maintaining the core payment processing infrastructure that powers all Cedar applications and ensures seamless, secure transactions for our patients. As an engineer, you'll work closely with fellow engineers to design, build, and enhance our core payment processing system.

At the P3 level, this means taking significant ownership of key system components, driving technical decisions, and mentoring junior engineers through complex challenges. You will be instrumental in evolving our infrastructure for scale, reliability, and security.

In this position you will

  • Design, build, test, and maintain robust and efficient features to enhance the payment system, demonstrating a structured approach to problem-solving, including clarifying requirements, considering edge cases, proposing multiple solutions with their trade-offs, and iterating effectively.
  • Collaborate with our counterparts on the product, design, and client success teams to solve problems and improve patient and client experience, clearly articulating your technical thought process, design decisions, and the 'why' behind solutions.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the payment processing lifecycle, and gateway/processor integrations to identify areas for optimization, risk mitigation, and strategic enhancement of our payment infrastructure.
  • Champion high code quality standards, robust testing, and maintainability through thoughtful PR reviews and by setting a technical example for the team.
  • Proactively build features and tools to enhance the stability, performance, security, and observability of our critical payment infrastructure, anticipating future needs and potential issues.

What we look for in a candidate:

  • 4-6 years of professional software development experience.
  • Proven experience independently leading the design and implementation of complex technical problems, especially with backend systems. You consistently demonstrate structured thinking, efficiency, and the ability to simplify complex challenges, rather than overcomplicating them.
  • Strong ownership mentality and focus on delivering value, driving impactful solutions that contribute significantly to the reliability, security, and scalability of our payment platform.
  • Excellent technical communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate your problem-solving approach, design decisions, and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences, and to incorporate feedback effectively.
  • Passion for our mission and a commitment to solving problems for our patients.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with product, design, and data science teams.
  • Experience building integrations with payment processing systems is a plus, but not required.

Compensation Range and Benefits

  • Salary/Hourly Rate Range*: $170,000 - $215,000
  • This role is equity eligible
  • This role offers a competitive benefits and wellness package

*Subject to location, experience, and education
